LEGO rumoured to be revisiting Marvel Comic-Con-exclusive set in 2024

The LEGO Group is rumoured to be revisiting the concept behind a Comic-Con-exclusive LEGO Marvel set in 2024, hooked to a template first introduced last summer.

An initial list of rumoured LEGO Marvel 2024 sets surfaced online yesterday, painting a picture of a year without new MCU movies to draw on (which is to say, a year full of Infinity Saga sets). The summer wave is said to be returning to the likes of Guardians of the Galaxy, Thor: Ragnarok and Avengers: Age of Ultron for inspiration, and it’s through the lens of the first Avengers sequel that the LEGO Group looks set to continue its Marvel dioramas.

Last summer brought us 76261 Spider-Man Final Battle and 76266 Endgame Final Battle, a pair of products that share more than just monikers: these final battles are also each planted on round black bases, crystallising a new template for LEGO Marvel display models. 76291 Avengers: Age of Ultron Final Battle – as reported by exabrickslegogo_ – sounds like it will do something similar for the 2015 team-up movie, coming in at the same price as its Spider-Man: No Way Home predecessor at $109.99.

If that’s true, this will be the first LEGO Marvel set to approach the film’s climax since Throne of Ultron, which was available exclusively at San Diego Comic-Con in 2015 and now commands an average of £389 new on BrickLink. 76209 Iron Man vs. Ultron did something a little similar in the vaguest of ways – Tony Stark battling three Ultron drones – but the SDCC exclusive was the only set to depict the rogue AI’s throne.

Exactly what will be included in 76291 Avengers: Age of Ultron Final Battle is still anyone’s guess, but that price tag suggests we’re looking at something far more substantial than either of the previous sets that have touched on the film’s final showdown. For that reason, it’s unlikely to impact the aftermarket price of the Comic-Con set much (if at all), regardless of its contents.

Still, here’s hoping the model does materialise as a diorama built around Ultron’s throne, because you can see the LEGO Group doing some interesting things with that concept, much as it did with the destruction and debris in 76266 Endgame Final Battle. This would also be the perfect opportunity to bring us a bunch of new Age of Ultron characters – a new Hulk is already rumoured to be included – such as our first Quicksilver since 2015’s 76041 The Hydra Fortress Smash.

It’s reasonably safe to assume Ultron Prime would make the cut, along with at least a couple of the main Avengers cast, but the nameless goons will presumably be left to 76287 Iron Legion vs. Ultron Sentries Battle Pack, which is also rumoured to be on the way this summer. I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
