LEGO rumoured to be skipping flagship LEGO Icons set for 2023

The LEGO Group is rumoured to be skipping its flagship LEGO Icons release for 2023, which is bad news for fans of massive sets, but good news for wallets everywhere…

For the past couple of years, the LEGO Group has marked the end of the calendar with a major release under the LEGO Icons banner. In 2021, 10294 Titanic sailed on to store shelves, and a year later 10307 Eiffel Tower demanded more space than many of us have to spare. Having now conquered both the horizontal and vertical domains between those two sets, the company is apparently taking a rest in 2023.

That’s according to brick_clicker, who reports that the LEGO Group won’t be following up those sets with a similarly wallet-busting release in 2023. 10294 Titanic retails for £589.99 / $679.99 / €679.99, while 10307 Eiffel Tower is priced at £554.99 / $629.99 / €629.99. Either or both of those would put a significant dent in any LEGO budget, but you seemingly won’t have to worry about a similar situation this year.

The same source hopes that the flagship LEGO Icons releases will return in 2024, so they’re definitely not out for the count. But the LEGO Group may have decided that the market just can’t bear another £500+ set right now – especially with so many more massive models releasing nearly every month. 10316 The Lord of the Rings: Rivendell is already eating into 2023 budgets, while 71799 NINJAGO City Markets is right around the corner

This is still just a rumour for now, of course – and a mighty LEGO Icons set could well be in the works for 2023 (and brick_clicker just doesn’t know about it). We won’t really know for sure until the end of the year, as both 10294 Titanic and 10307 Eiffel Tower launched in November.

And this isn’t to say there won’t be plenty of smaller LEGO Icons sets demanding a slice of your disposable income – including 10318 Concorde, which is rumoured to be coming in September.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
