Rumoured LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog summer 2024 sets party like it's 1992

Three brand new LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog sets are rumoured to be on the way in summer 2024, and they're getting ready to party like it's 1992...

The LEGO Group hit play on its most recent foray into video game territory – at least until Animal Crossing comes along in March – in summer 2023, and dove back into its original save file earlier this month with 76995 Shadow's Escape and 76996 Knuckles' Guardian Mech. Instagram user mtdbricks now claims that the Sonic the Hedgehog theme will return this summer with a trio of new sets.

Probably the highlight of those from name alone is 76999 Super Sonic vs. Egg Drillster, which promises to introduce the super state of Sonic the Hedgehog that originally appeared in 1992's Sonic the Hedgehog 2. In this supersonic transformation, the blue blur turns into a yellow blur by harnessing the power of the seven Chaos Emeralds, which in turn gives him new powers and abilities.

Any LEGO minifigure of Super Sonic will likely be a similarly recoloured version of the standard Sonic the Hedgehog minifigure, which suggests we’re looking at a wave of reused elements – at least going by the rumoured product names. The other two sets listed by mtdbricks are 76997 Tails’ Adventure Boat and 76998 Knuckles and the Master Emerald, both featuring characters we’ve seen before in LEGO.

Other new minifigure moulds could obviously be included and just not named in those set titles, but at the moment the most interesting pick from the summer 2024 LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog wave – beyond Super Sonic – might just be the Egg Drillster. Like the transformed version of the main character, Dr. Eggman’s modified Egg Mobile first debuted in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in 1992, and could make for a pretty cool LEGO set.

The price tag certainly has room for something substantial, as it’s said to ring in at $99.99 in the US. That puts it tied with 76994 Sonic's Green Hill Zone Loop Challenge for the most expensive set in the entire theme so far. The other two sets come in at mid-range prices, leaving January’s pair of builds as the only pocket money-priced entries in the theme for 2024.
