LEGO Speed Champions rumoured piece counts offer clues for upcoming sets

A remarkably high piece count for one rumoured LEGO Speed Champions set suggests something new could be on its way.

According to recent rumours from usually reliable Instagram user 1414falconfan (via maxbautde), LEGO Speed Champions is shaping up to have a year focused on double packs, with not one but two rumoured to be on the way, 76924 Mercedes Double Pack and 76925 Aston Martin Double Pack. Believed to be coming out in June 2024, the two double packs share the same expected price of $49.99 (in line with similar releases) – but the piece counts differ by a surprising amount.

76925 Aston Martin Double Pack is rumoured to include 564 pieces, exactly the same as 76909 Mercedes-AMG F1 W12 E Performance & Mercedes-AMG Project One and similar to 76918 McLaren Solus GT & McLaren F1 LM. However, this jumps up by around 250 pieces for 76924 Mercedes Double Pack, with a rumoured 806 pieces.

This is certainly unusual for a LEGO Speed Champions set and is almost enough pieces to build a third car. The rumoured name specifies it’s a double pack and a trio of cars would surely increase the price, so that’s unlikely. However, unless there’s a sizeable side-build that bulks up the piece count, it could mean that we’ll see a new car design in 76924 Mercedes Double Pack.

A much larger build could suggest it features an SUV-style car – although this feels unlikely for a race-focused theme like LEGO Speed Champions. Mercedes classic cars are known for their blocky shapes, such as the Mercedes 190 E Evo, so a car with a similarly massive hood and bulky bumpers could account for the increase in pieces.

Another possibility is that the LEGO Group is planning to focus on Formula 1 in 76924 Mercedes Double Pack. One of the cars in 76909 Mercedes-AMG F1 W12 E Performance & Mercedes-AMG Project One was already Formula 1-themed but a double pack that picks out Mercedes’ success in the motorsport could include more details in side build, such as trappings from the grid, tools from a pit stop, or even multiple minifigures picking out some iconic drivers from throughout Mercedes’ history in Formula 1.

Of course, this all remains firmly in the world of speculation for now. We won’t know anything for sure – or in fact if these rumoured price counts are correct – until we get official confirmation from the LEGO Group. With an expected release date of June 2024, this will likely be on its way in the next few months if the release dates are correct.
