LEGO spoiled Star Wars: Andor’s big twist for Andy Serkis

Star Wars: Andor actor Andy Serkis has revealed how he figured out his character’s big reveal through his son’s LEGO set.

Serkis returned to a galaxy far, far away for last year’s Rogue One prequel series, having initially loaned his mo-cap skills to Supreme Leader Snoke in The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi. In Andor, the Lord of the Rings actor plays Kino Loy, a day shift manager at the prison on Narkina 5. His arc in the first series concludes with leading Cassian Andor and his fellow prisoners on an escape to freedom – one that he ultimately can’t complete himself thanks to never taking swimming lessons.

Both showrunner Tony Gilroy and Serkis have confirmed that the character did not perish in the escape attempt, however – and Kino Loy will seemingly return for the show’s second season. In an interview with The Wrap, Serkis has now revealed that coming back to Star Wars as a different character gave him some hesitation – “Are fans going to start thinking, is Kino Loy related to Snoke?” – but the strength of the script persuaded him to take the plunge.

One thing he didn’t need to watch the final series on Disney+ to discover, though, was the ultimate twist for Kino Loy and the rest of his fellow prisoners on Narkina 5. In a scene following the credits of the final episode, the camera pulls back to reveal that the machinery Kino Loy, Cassian Andor and company have been assembling in the prison are parts for the Death Star – the irony being that the spherical superweapon is ultimately responsible for Andor’s demise in Rogue One.

“It is such a brilliant idea,” Serkis said, “but I’d already figured it out because my son had the LEGO model [of the Death Star].”

The actor doesn’t specify which LEGO Death Star he’s referring to, but it could well be 10188 Death Star or 75159 Death Star. Both of those playsets feature hints of the space station’s architecture, which could have given Serkis clues that Narkina 5’s assembly line was more than just busywork for its captives. It might also have been 10143 Death Star II, which has a greater focus on the fully armed and operational battle station’s structure.

Or he might have simply figured it out from how grey every LEGO Death Star is. But then, something in LEGO Star Wars being grey doesn’t exactly narrow it down…

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
