LEGO Star Wars 75375 Millennium Falcon review

LEGO Star Wars 75375 Millennium Falcon manages to take something now very familiar and make it very interesting all over again.

Coming in at 921 pieces and a price of £74.99 / $99.99 / €99.99, LEGO Star Wars 75375 Millennium Falcon leads the return to midi-scale for the theme for several reasons, starting with the fact it is the most expensive and most detailed of the three ships releasing this March. Alongside that, it is based on one of the franchise’s most beloved ships and already has a previous version at this scale released by the LEGO Group some years ago. There are plenty of expectations to meet, so how does this hunk of junk shape up?

— LEGO Star Wars 75375 Millennium Falcon build —

LEGO Star Wars 75375 Millennium Falcon shapes up exceedingly well, making full use of those 921 pieces across this excellently-sized version of the ship. You can see from every angle that a lot of recognisable features to the craft have been credibly captured across a skilful build that includes various techniques, some of which are subtle in application but surprisingly effective and necessary. One case in point is the sloping of the bodywork across the ship both top and bottom, for how it’s achieved and how securely it sits too. It’s the sort of LEGO set you haven’t yet built in such a way, and it’s all the better for it.

In general, the iconic and quite unique shaping to the Falcon is brilliantly recreated at this smaller size. It’s brilliant because whilst it feels relatively simple in how it’s all done, this is a fussy and very particular design of ship with dimensions that could otherwise warp the whole thing out of shape, particularly so at such a scale where the length of one stud or the thickness of one plate represents a much greater amount.

75375 Millennium Falcon is careful in its design, though, and pulls together everything that it needs to. That’s not only to immediately settle your eyes on it as an authentic recreation of the ship, but also to hold your attention with all those extra bits of finer detail that were simply not present the last time the LEGO Star Wars team did this ship at this scale – some 15 years ago with 7778 Millennium Falcon, with almost 600 pieces fewer.

It makes for a LEGO Star Wars set that is interesting to put together in a new and refreshing way. While the temptation with consuming so many LEGO sets is to chase novelty for the sake of it, 75375 Millennium Falcon does offer that, but without skimping on the fundamentals of what the best LEGO Star Wars sets can offer. The build experience is engaging, the attention to detail is excellent and the end result is very playable and perfectly displayable.

Yes, it’s meant to be a display piece, but this is a size of ship that is also handy to, well, have in your hands. It’s fun to pick up and swoosh around and it’s only in doing that that you’ll begin to think about how other ships from Star Wars could scale at this size to match – indeed, are any of the X-wing polybags or advent calendar models perhaps already there?

As it is, we assume the novelty of playing with the model will wear off (we can’t verify this as we can’t stop fiddling with it) and, alongside being only buildable the once, it leads 75375 Millennium Falcon to its core purpose, as a display piece for your desk, for your LEGO Star Wars diorama, or more generally for an already cluttered shelf full of other stuff.

In any situation or set-up you intend for it, 75375 Millennium Falcon looks the part. Those finer details unlocked through a higher piece count really do set the model apart in a premium way that feels like it cannot age, where other sets may begin to lose their shine after a few years. It’s a quality of finish that is also best otherwise comparable to the Ultimate Collector Series LEGO Star Wars sets, and for all the same reasons, just at a different scale. And that’s probably the fairest way to think of 75375 Millennium Falcon – it’s a midi-scale UCS set offering an advanced and one-of-a-kind building experience to faithfully recreate an iconic ship from a galaxy far, far away that will forever look awesome on display.

— LEGO Star Wars 75375 Millennium Falcon characters —

Like the other midi-scale ships releasing this year, LEGO Star Wars 75375 Millennium Falcon does not come with a minifigure, which for this set feels like a misstep where a Han Solo with arm printing or dual-moulded legs would have perfectly complemented the display model.

— LEGO Star Wars 75375 Millennium Falcon price —

LEGO Star Wars 75375 Millennium Falcon retails at full price for £74.99 / $84.99 / €84.99, which is no small amount for a display piece to come in at. For those ready for a mini-UCS LEGO experience that genuinely offers a fresh look at a very familiar ship from a galaxy far, far away, this will certainly deliver on value. If the diorama sets of the past couple of years are any indicator, mind, this could soon be on offer, at which point it’s certainly worth picking up, particularly of the three midi-scale ships releasing March 2024.

— LEGO Star Wars 75375 Millennium Falcon pros and cons —

LEGO Star Wars 75375 Millennium Falcon offers a fresh take on an old familiar for the theme, serving up an involved and interesting LEGO building experience at a reduced scale, all the while skilfully paying homage to all the details that make this vehicle so iconic within the Star Wars galaxy. While the price may cause you to pause, don’t sleep on this set before it’s gone as it’s a unique, high-quality model for any older LEGO Star Wars fan.
