LEGO Star Wars 75440 AT-AT is a masterclass in subverting expectations

LEGO Star Wars 75440 AT-AT takes the Starship Collection in a new creative direction, showcasing the unlimited potential of midi-scale walkers.

The LEGO Group’s midi-scale Star Wars sets – including those of the Starship Collection – have covered only starships so far, and almost exclusively much larger vehicles capable of carrying entire armies through space. 75440 AT-AT stomps on to the scene next year to subvert all expectations and prove that this can and should be the future of midi-scale Star Wars models.

We weren’t expecting a walker to enter the LEGO Star Wars Starship Collection, but 75440 AT-AT is right at home in this scale, coming across as much bigger than the rest of the starships. Despite the difference in downsized dimensions, 75440 AT-AT makes better use of midi-scale than any of the starships before it, able to show off a variety of clever techniques and a fantastic swathe of detail, all without breaking the bank.

A LEGO Star Wars AT-AT under $80 is almost unheard of (save for this year’s festive addition), and while you won’t be packing any minifigures into 75440 AT-AT, that’s not to suggest that this miniature Imperial walker model is light on the interior. Despite the size and piece count, the build’s insides leave a good impression, referencing the likes of Octan for fuel, a thermal detonator (which should be in a different AT-AT, but we’ll let it slide), and three small Snowtroopers.

This continues in the head, featuring a miniature AT-AT pilot and General Veers at the helm of the walker. Admiring these interior details is easy too, only requiring the removal of one subassembly (or none for the head). The fact that it’s so easy to take off the outer plating of 75440 AT-AT to see these interior details is a testament to the designers.

Back on the outside of the walker, this model makes great use of the Starship Collection’s traditional display base, eschewing the black stand and instead leaving an impression on the familiar foundation as it steps across it. The mid-step pose recreated in 75440 AT-AT is fantastic, and sturdy to boot. The build leans on each of its legs as well as a small ramp that you won’t easily spot. The LEGO Star Wars team have made amazing use of the usually static mech limb pieces to achieve the illusion of movement on such a small scale.

This dynamic pose goes perfectly with the miniature Snowspeeder swooping around 75440 AT-AT, with a rope in tow to trip it up. It’s a simple addition, but one that demonstrates great usage of pieces rarely seen in LEGO Star Wars. It all combines to make for a standout LEGO Star Wars building experience from the first piece to the last.

The rest of the walker isn’t static either, as you can move the head with an accurately limited range of motion. It’s not often that midi-scale LEGO Star Wars sets are quite this interactive, and it’s hard not to love these small touches.

At £59.99 / $64.99 / €64.99, the 525-piece 75440 AT-AT isn’t a huge build, even compared to other midi-scale models, but right now it has additional appeal from being such a unique entry in this collection. In the event that other midi-scale walkers stomp on to the scene (an AT-TE, anyone?), this will quickly change.

At the time of writing, you won’t be disappointed in 75440 AT-AT for £59.99 / $64.99 / €64.99, and it’s a genuinely fun LEGO Star Wars set that looks fantastic on display. You’re unlikely to regret picking up this build in early 2026 and embracing this unusual addition to the Starship Collection.

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.
