LEGO Star Wars fans want one astromech and one astromech only

LEGO Star Wars is rumoured to welcome a brick-built astromech droid next year – but not the one that fans really want.

According to the latest rumour from Promobricks’ Max Börnicke, 75379 R2-D2 is scheduled to release on March 1, 2024, featuring a 1,050-piece buildable version of the astromech for €99.99, as well as the somewhat surprising inclusion of a Darth Malak minifigure from Knights of the Old Republic. While Artoo might be one of the most beloved droids in Star Wars, there are already a fair few ways to get your hands on a LEGO version of the lovable astromech – but fewer to get a hold of his more criminally-inclined cousin.

We’re talking, of course, about Chopper, who originally appeared in Star Wars: Rebels and recently shot back to the forefront of the fandom by appearing for the first time in live-action in Disney+’s Ahsoka. Although we’ve had two minifigure versions of Chop, including a brand-new update to the figure in 2023’s 75357 Ghost & Phantom II, we’ve never had a buildable Chopper – and fans are keen for this to be rectified.

As well as posting on X as above, some of the first comments on Instagram posts about the rumoured 75379 R2-D2 were centred around the arm-waving droid. “Wasted opportunity for Chopper,” commented one Instagram user, while another added: “Just give us Chopper already”.

A buildable Chop certainly has plenty of fun opportunities. He’s one of the most expressive droids, from his humanoid beeps to his waving mechanical arms. Much like 75187 BB-8, having some kind of wheel or knob that would raise his arms up in the air would add extra fun to an already sure-to-be-popular model.

Of course, the planning schedule that goes into making LEGO sets would have started long before Ahsoka came out and shot everyone’s favourite war criminal back to the front of everyone’s minds. While Chopper has long since been a fan favourite, he’s definitely received a resurgence since appearing in live-action, so perhaps that will be enough to encourage the LEGO Group to translate him into a brick-built model. For now, we haven’t heard a whisper about a buildable Chopper and indeed won’t know if the rumours around 75379 R2-D2 are true until we get official confirmation from the LEGO Group, so take them with a pinch of salt for now.

I write about all the very best fandoms – and that means LEGO, of course. Spending so much time looking at and talking about LEGO sets is dangerous for my bank balance, but the LEGO shelves are thriving. You win some, you lose some.
