LEGO Star Wars Lightsaber GWP fetching vast sums after selling out worldwide

LEGO Star Wars 40730 Luke Skywalker’s Lightsaber is fetching a pretty penny on the aftermarket after selling out at LEGO.com in most regions worldwide.

The third in a series of buildable lightsabers attached to the release of flagship LEGO Star Wars sets, 40730 Luke Skywalker’s Lightsaber was available exclusively with 75397 Jabba’s Sail Barge from October 3 through 10 (or while stock lasted). But as of October 4, it’s already vanished from LEGO.com in the UK, US and Europe – and many of those lucky enough to secure a copy are now cashing in on eBay.

In the UK, 40730 Luke Skywalker’s Lightsaber is selling for upwards of £100 on the auction site, with one recent buy-it-now listing fetching a whopping £124.99. That’s a hefty chunk of change to slice off the initial cost of 75397 Jabba’s Sail Barge, which retails for £429.99 in the UK. In the US, the gift-with-purchase has sold on eBay for as much as $179, with current listings asking for up to $200.

40730 Luke Skywalker’s Lightsaber is still available directly from LEGO.com with orders of 75397 Jabba’s Sail Barge in Australia at least, but given how quickly it’s sold out in other regions you’ll probably want to order soon to guarantee your copy. You’ll also qualify for both 40697 Halloween Pumpkin and 40728 Brite Bomber.

If you’re happy to forgo the box, instructions and printed plaque – the model’s only exclusive element – you can apparently piece together 40730 Luke Skywalker’s Lightsaber for much less than £100 / $150 on Pick a Brick. But if you’re still keen to get your hands on the official set and can’t stomach paying those aftermarket prices, your best bet at this point is probably phoning up your local LEGO Store to see if they have any left.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
