LEGO Star Wars The Mandalorian sets are increasingly all about the minifigures

Two more LEGO Star Wars sets based on The Mandalorian season 3 are rumoured to be on the way, with the minifigures stealing the show in both.

Thanks to the latest rumours reported by LEGO YouTuber MaxBaut, we’ve got more details on two sets believed to be based on The Mandalorian’s most recent season: 75373 Ambush on Mandalore Battle Pack and 75386 Paz Vizsla and Moff Gideon Battle. Both have pretty small piece counts of 108 and 289 respectively and the rumoured details we’ve had so far suggest the minifigures will be the main appeal of both.

As the name of 75373 Ambush on Mandalore Battle Pack suggests, this set is a Mandalorian-themed battle pack, featuring four minifigures believed to be divided into two Imperial troopers (with beskar armour and a new helmet mould) and two anonymous Mandalorians. This is set to be a handy pack for anyone wanting to display the dramatic final battle on Mandalore, or perhaps even to build up a sizable crew of Mandalorians for other displays.

75386 Paz Vizsla and Moff Gideon Battle focuses more on named characters, including four minifigures again, including Paz Vizsla and Moff Gideon. The former is believed to come equipped with a new, oversized gun, while Moff is expected to get a brand-new helmet mold to reflect his new horned look.

A recent trend in LEGO Star Wars The Mandalorian sets

Looking at a number of recent LEGO Star Wars sets based on the live-action show, the minifigures being the central appeal is nothing new. 75361 Spider Tank and 75346 Pirate Snub Fighter both have their own minifigure advantages, with the former featuring Din Djarin with the darksaber element for the first time and 75346 Pirate Snub Fighter being the only way to get your hands on Vane and a uniquely printed co-pilot.

Arguably, 75348 Mandalorian Fang Fighter vs. TIE Interceptor’s focus is certainly the two ships. However, when compared to earlier The Mandalorian-themed LEGO sets, as well as LEGO Star Wars Ahsoka sets from around the same time, there are far fewer iconic locations or ships featured. Indeed, there’s not actually a scene in the show where we see a fang fighter go up against a TIE interceptor.

After all, Ahsoka sparked the release of the similar 75364 New Republic E-Wing vs. Shin Hati’s Starfighter but this was paired with two detailed ship sets with a stacked minifigure line-up in 75362 Ahsoka Tano’s T-6 Jedi Shuttle and 75357 Ghost & Phantom II.

Has LEGO Star Wars run out of The Mandalorian inspiration?

This is likely in part due to the content of the shows – Ahsoka saw its cast journey to more entirely new locations and ships that needed their own sets – but can’t entirely account for it. Indeed, Brick Fanatics readers came up with ten sets that we still need from season 3 alone pretty easily.

It raises the question of whether the larger LEGO Star Wars options based on The Mandalorian have simply run dry. When we’ve had recent versions of both the Razor Crest and Din’s new N-1 starfighter, Grogu as a buildable creature, a helmet for Mando, and various other ships besides, where else is there left to go?

To be clear, this is in no way a bad thing: the rumoured details on the minifigures coming up in 75373 Ambush on Mandalore Battle Pack and 75386 Paz Vizsla and Moff Gideon Battle sound like they could be great for collectors. However, it does offer some idea of what to expect from LEGO The Mandalorian sets down the line and indicates where the LEGO Group is putting its focus for its larger sets.

For 2024, the focus appears to be on the 25th anniversary, with throwback builds galore. In general, the larger sets seem to be going to newer Disney+ titles, like 2023’s Ahsoka and 2024’s Skeleton Crew. It’s no secret that larger themes like LEGO Star Wars need to keep a balance between larger, more expensive display-focused sets and smaller sets that might be focused more on play options or minifigures, but tracking this trend of certain sets being used for specific shows could help with expectations for upcoming LEGO Star Wars sets.

Speaking of what’s to come, scroll down for a summary of every LEGO Star Wars set confirmed and rumoured for 2024 – with the caveat that nothing is 100% confirmed until the LEGO Group officially reveals it.
