LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is a ‘flag-bearer for a new era of LEGO video games’

TT Games’ Head of Design says LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga will be a ‘flag-bearer for a new era of LEGO video games’.

Speaking on the latest episode of the Bits N’ Bricks podcast, the studio’s Arthur Parsons – who’s helmed multiple LEGO video games over the past decade-plus – discussed the impact the upcoming LEGO Star Wars sequel is set to have on the team’s titles moving forward.

“Personally I think that LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is going to mean a new bar,” Arthur said. “Effectively it’s the flag-bearer for a new era of LEGO video games, for us definitely at TT Games. I can’t wait for people to be able to play LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga and then anything else we make for the rest of our time.”

TT Games’ Head of Production and Strategic Director Jonathan Smith also reflected on the game’s delay from 2020 to spring 2021, and the effect that’s had on not just the fans, but the people putting the game together.

“2020 [was] the first year since 2005 that we have not released a brand new LEGO game,” Smith said. “And that has an incredible power for us – we feel that physically; that changes our year materially, for those hundreds of people within the studio in particular, who are used to putting in the work for creating and releasing games.

“The positive side is that we know that what we’re doing there is building up anticipation for the results of what will have been an unprecedented investment and effort that’s been made, to create what will be our biggest and best ever LEGO game with LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga.”

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
