LEGO starts World Play Day with Seoul park transformation
It’s not quite World Play Day yet, but the LEGO Group has started early by celebrating Children’s Week in South Korea with a Seoul transformation.
The LEGO Group recently used 6,000,000 pieces to transform the historic Gwanghwamun Square in Seoul into a giant playground from May 2 to 5. The activation was done in partnership with the Seoul Metropolitan Government, and families were invited to make memories in the middle of the busy city.
The LEGO event was a major part of the annual Gwanghwamun Family Festival, featuring minifigure treasure hunts, car races, giant city displays and a colossal mosaic at the heart of the space. This mosaic used five million of the six million total pieces from the event, depicting parts of Seoul with minifigures exploring the city.

For every person who helped build the mosaic, The LEGO Group has announced they will donate a set to a child in need of play in the local community.
“These donations form part of our ongoing commitment to reaching more children with play in Korea,” commented General Manager of LEGO Korea, HeeYoung Chung, on the donation initiative. “We partner with local organisations and hospitals to help ensure more children have access to playful experiences, wherever they grow up.”
While we don’t know the specific number of people who took part in the build, the massive size of the mosaic likely means a substantial number of donations are to be made. You can take a much closer look at the full event’s offerings with the below unofficial walkthrough, though you might become jealous at missing out.
The LEGO Group’s plans for World Play Day 2026 have yet to be confirmed following last year’s worldwide activations, but the ball has started rolling early with this event in Seoul.
