LEGO Super Mario 2023 sets delve deeper into Mario’s world

The LEGO Super Mario is rapidly expanding to include more background characters, as evidenced by the most recent wave of sets.

In the latest release of sets, the world of LEGO Super Mario expanded to include not just the central cast of Mario, Luigi, Peach, and the rest, but also lesser-known figures that fill out their universe. Hammer Bro, Blooper, and Birdo all appear in 71413 Character Packs, while 71417 Fliprus Snow Adventure gets it name from the pink walrus-style enemies that builders can now face down.

For a franchise that’s been around for 42 years, there are plenty of depths left to plumb so it’s encouraging to see that the LEGO Group isn’t sticking to the most well-known characters but is dipping into the background figures. What’s more, with the upcoming release of Super Mario Bros. Movie offers a whole new world of possibilities to the LEGO Super Mario theme.

That’s not to say there aren’t still gaps to be filled. The space where Waluigi should be sitting is still conspicuously empty, as well as Baby versions of the main gang. Still, considering the theme hasn’t been around for all that long, the brick-built ensemble is filling out pretty nicely.
