Rumoured LEGO Super Mario figure upgrade may be better than expected

Rumour has it that the three LEGO Super Mario figures are due to receive upgraded versions later this year, but it may be better than expected.

A new list of rumoured LEGO Super Mario Summer 2024 sets from itavixbrix via brick_clicker includes the previously-rumoured 71439 Mario Starter Course, 71440 Luigi Starter Course and 71441 Peach Starter Course.

The current array of LEGO Super Mario starter packs includes 71360 Adventures with Mario, 71387 Adventures with Luigi and 71403 Adventures with Peach but they’re all scheduled to retire this July at the time of writing. These dates are subject to change but it would be the perfect time to introduce starter packs.

One extra tidbit of information may have revealed why three new starter packs are needed. It’s rumoured that the figures included in the three new starter packs could be brand-new versions of Mario, Luigi and Peach. As well as other minor updates, it’s claimed that they’ll be able to be charged with a USB connection, instead of batteries as is the case with the current trio.

These details have yet to be confirmed as have any of the rumoured LEGO Super Mario summer 2024 sets. You can find out more about the latest rumours for the theme by clicking here. The rest of the range covers locations and enemies seen previously in LEGO Super Mario and new areas too, suggesting that this could be a soft refresh for the theme four years after its launch.

As Ashnflash theorises, this might not mean that any hopes of a LEGO Mario Kart range are dead in the water. The piece used for 71431 Bowser’s Muscle Car still offers a generic car function and new starter packs could be a chance to include a unique vehicle for each of the figure trio.

71360 Adventures with Mario has 231 pieces, 71387 Adventures with Luigi has 280 pieces and 71403 Adventures with Peach has 354 pieces all for $59.99. Save for Mario’s set, the piece counts in the new rumoured starter courses are significantly lower and the price might reflect this.

It could be that the new starter packs focus on a unique vehicle for each character with fewer models for the course-building system to encourage enthusiasts to buy other models as well. As the video theory notes, the summer 2024 wave has a set ideal for Peach – 71435 Peach’s Castle and another for Luigi – 71436 King Boos Haunted Mansion. Mario is more universal and may not need a specific expansion set targeted at the character.

It’s only a theory and nothing has been officially confirmed but at least the framework for LEGO Mario Kart is in place and a soft refresh for the theme may be the perfect time to introduce an ongoing Mario Kart collection. Either way, it likely shuts down the possibility of LEGO Super Mario minifigures for now, despite Animal Crossing recently debuting Nintendo minifigures. This all depends on the rumour’s accuracy though.
