LEGO Super Mario World Yoshi model rumoured for this year

The next 18+ LEGO Super Mario set is rumoured to lean into sprites with a Super Mario World recreation the likes of which the theme has not seen.

Instagram user itavix, via brick_clicker, reports that the previously rumoured 71438 18+ LEGO Super Mario set will be a homage to Super Mario World. Specifically, the new rumour is that 71438 Super Mario World: Mario and Yoshi will recreate the sprite of Mario riding on Yoshi’s back from the game in an 8-bit 2D style.

It’s believed that the rumoured 18+ set will cost $129.99 with 1,215 pieces and launch on October 1 – a month after 77092 Great Deku Tree 2-in-1 is scheduled to be released.

The 1990 game has been re-released and we can get a good idea of what to expect thanks to the high-quality screenshots provided by Nintendo.

LEGO enthusiasts have long been creating unofficial 2D builds based on Super Mario and it was only a matter of time until the official theme ventured into this territory, though currently 71438 Super Mario World: Mario and Yoshi is only a rumour and should be taken with caution.

Should the rumour be accurate, it would be yet another LEGO Super Mario 18+ set to not include minifigures while both LEGO Animal Crossing and LEGO The Legend of Zelda have debuted (or will be debuting later this year) minifigures immediately.

Previous LEGO Super Mario 18+ models include the downscaled 71426 Piranha Plant and the massive puppet-like 71411 The Mighty Bowser.

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.
