The next 18+ LEGO Super Mario set is rumoured to lean into sprites with a Super Mario World recreation the likes of which the theme has not seen.
Instagram user itavix, via brick_clicker, reports that the previously rumoured 71438 18+ LEGO Super Mario set will be a homage to Super Mario World. Specifically, the new rumour is that 71438 Super Mario World: Mario and Yoshi will recreate the sprite of Mario riding on Yoshi's back from the game in an 8-bit 2D style.

LEGO enthusiasts have long been creating unofficial 2D builds based on Super Mario and it was only a matter of time until the official theme ventured into this territory, though currently 71438 Super Mario World: Mario and Yoshi is only a rumour and should be taken with caution.

Should the rumour be accurate, it would be yet another LEGO Super Mario 18+ set to not include minifigures while both LEGO Animal Crossing and LEGO The Legend of Zelda have debuted (or will be debuting later this year) minifigures immediately.
