LEGO teases long-rumoured 31205 Batman Art mosaic

The LEGO Group has teased the imminent launch of a new LEGO Art set based on Batman, which was originally rumoured as far back as October 2020.

News of a Dark Knight-themed mosaic emerged at the same time as the first reports of 31203 World Map, which materialised in May last year. We then heard comparatively little about the Batman set until September and November 2021, when more detailed rumours pointed to a piece count of 4,167 and a potential release date of March 2022.

The official LEGO Twitter account has now published a 12-second video asking: “Who framed Batman?” The answer is presumably ‘the LEGO Group’ (in a picture frame – geddit?), especially as the words are constructed from yellow 1×1 round plates.

That suggests the final mosaic will take the studs-up approach of 31199 Marvel Studios Iron Man and 31201 Harry Potter Hogwarts Crests, rather than the smooth tiles of 31202 Disney’s Mickey Mouse and 21226 Art Project – Create Together. And as per those sets, it’s likely that 31205 Batman Art (as is its rumoured title) will include multiple two-dimensional designs.

While the details are unverified at the moment, the LEGO Group’s tease essentially confirms the set is coming. And given the timing, that rumoured March release seems all the more likely.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
