LEGO Technic could be diving into its full potential in summer 2024

Over LEGO Technic’s history, one form of transportation has received a lot less focus than the rest, but that’s rumoured to change this summer.

LEGO Technic’s multitude of sets have covered vehicles of land, air, space and sea, with the number of builds for each represented in that order. Boats and other aquatic methods of transportation haven’t been anywhere near as present as cars, planes and more in LEGO Technic since the beginning of the theme in 1977. There have been fewer than 20 sets with main models or alternate builds depicting boats, for instance.

Rumour has it that water-bound vehicles will finally be getting their time in the spotlight this summer as 42174 is reported to be an 18+ water vehicle model for $119.99. Provided the piece count is reflective of that price, the rumoured set could be about the same size as 42064 Ocean Explorer from 2017, which features 1,327 pieces for $119.99.

The retired LEGO Technic set is by far the biggest of the theme’s boats and other forms of water-compatible transportation. They were all released before the concept of 18+ models was introduced too, so there’s undoubtedly a lot of potential for an 18+ LEGO Technic boat. That’s assuming that the rumoured 42174 18+ Water Vehicle is a boat or hovercraft and not another kind of water-based vehicle, including a seaplane.

There’s little doubt that all kinds of water vehicles are still relatively untapped wells of potential for LEGO Technic and the rumour of an 18+ model could be a chance to realise that potential, making up for the fewer LEGO Technic water-based vehicles in its 47-year history.

As always, take all rumoured information with caution until more is officially confirmed and here’s a reminder of what is currently rumoured for LEGO Technic this summer.

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.

I really think that the Technic range lost its meaning.
It used to be about cogs, gears and “technical” stuff.
Now it’s just a bunch of different shaped “bricks”.

Yes there are some cool models, but they could be built – sometimes better – with the classic bricks.
