LEGO The Lord of the Rings BrickHeadz compared to the minifigures

Six LEGO The Lord of the Rings BrickHeadz are launching in 2023 offering a return to Middle-Earth, but five of them have had minifigures before.

With official and clear images for all three LEGO The Lord of the Rings BrickHeadz sets coming in 2023, a comparison to their available minifigures is in order as most characters are nothing new to the LEGO Group.

We say most as this is the first appearance of a LEGO Balrog outside of a video game, but for the rest of the BrickHeadz cast, here’s how they compare to their respective LEGO The Lord of the Rings minifigures, first launched in 2012 and 2013.

5 – Frodo

Featuring a green cape, the Frodo BrickHeadz from 40630 Frodo & Gollum is closest to the minifigure from 9472 Attack On Weathertop.

The bushy hair has been recreated in the BrickHeadz style with exposed studs but with a lot less volume than the minifigure hair would suggest. Sting has been upscaled too using a newer piece, though that might not be entirely good news

4 – Gollum

Admittedly, there’s not much that needs to be done in translating Gollum from a minifigure to BrickHeadz as the character isn’t exactly weighed down by his possessions.

Featuring the loincloth, very little hair highlighted on printed pieces and a fish that so many of his minifigures could be seen with including the one in 9470 Shelob Attacks, the Gollum BrickHeadz is about as accurate as it can be.

3 – Gandalf the Grey

Depicting Gandalf in his grey outfit, the Gandalf BrickHeadz in 40631 Gandalf the Grey & Balrog recreates the various pieces used in his minifigure with expert detail but keeping to the proportions of the theme. This includes the hat with a pointed tip.

Equipped with a staff and sword, the Gandalf BrickHeadz is closest to the minifigure found in either 30213 Gandalf at Dol Guldur or 79010 The Goblin King Battle, the latter of which is based on The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.

2 – Aragorn

As one half of the BrickHeadz recreating Aragorn and Arwen’s wedding, there’s no exact minifigure match to the Aragorn BrickHeadz but we can still compare certain features of the figure.

Looking at the Aragorn minifigure in 79007 Battle at the Black Gate, the minifigure’s long hair has been recreated in the 40632 Aragorn & Arwen BrickHeadz but it’s the beard that has the most interesting assembly, hanging upside down to best captured the full facial hair.

1 – Arwen

Similarly, Arwen has no minifigure exactly matching the wedding scene BrickHeadz in 40632 Aragorn & Arwen but several of her minifigure’s features carry over the brick-built figure.

Arwen’s only minifigure is featured in 79006 The Council of Elrond and it lacks the crown that the BrickHeadz features. Still, the character’s long hair is featured using curve elements with an angled tip. However, the pointed elven ears are only recreated using the standard BrickHeadz ear style, matching that of Frodo who has rounded ears.
