LEGO Tintin Moon Rocket’s adventure began with a simple mission

The fan designer behind 21367 Tintin Moon Rocket has revealed just how the upcoming LEGO Ideas comic book model’s journey began.

The LEGO Ideas team officially revealed 21367 Tintin Moon Rocket today, a 1,283-piece build due to launch next month. The 75th LEGO Ideas set is based on a winning fan submission from Alexis Dos Santos (aka TKel86), with the model’s humble origins emerging via a simple request from a fellow work colleague.

“For some time now, I have wanted to make a model based on Tintin,” Alexis told the LEGO Ideas blog. “I started this to help a co-worker, who wanted to find instructions for a Tintin rocket and couldn’t find anything she liked.”

That initial enquiry led the fan designer to set out on his own mission, researching the original Hergé vehicle in an attempt to recreate an accurate version of the iconic red-and-white spacecraft, ultimately presenting it as a LEGO Ideas submission.

“The first phase was to obtain all the visual references that I could find in comics,” explained Alexis. “Then, I designed everything on Stud.io or LDD. When I was satisfied with the proportions and appearance of the model, I made a first assembly with the right colours, just to check if the connections were possible.”

In a previous LEGO Ideas interview, Alexis had revealed some of the specific challenges that needed to be tackled in order for his submission to eventually become a reality and just how quickly the build came together.

“The hardest parts were recreating the curvature of the rocket and finding a way to connect the three floors in a solid way,” said Alexis. “To be completely honest, the model took just a few nights to be designed, and after two weeks I already had a prototype in my hands.

“Finally, there comes the phase in which we see the end result and can share it with everyone!”

21367 Tintin Moon Rocket will blast off on April 1 for £139.99 / $159.99 / €159.99, with pre-orders for the LEGO Ideas set now live.
