LEGO will strengthen its US presence with a new distribution centre in 2027

The LEGO Group has announced plans to bolster its presence in the US with a regional distribution centre in Virginia, opening alongside its new factory in 2027.

Construction on the 2 million-square-foot centre will get underway later this year at a former Rolls-Royce facility in Prince George County, not far from the 1.7 million-square-foot factory currently being built in Chesterfield County. It will be the LEGO Group’s second regional distribution centre in the Americas, with the first located in Fort Worth, Texas.

“The regional distribution centre will bring greater flexibility to our network, ensuring we are well positioned to support long-term growth in the Americas,” said the LEGO Group’s Chief Operations Officer Carsten Rasmussen. “Together with our future Virginia factory, the [centre] will shorten our supply chain in the region – reducing lead times for our customers as well as our environmental impact.”

The new centre is part of the LEGO Group’s wider strategy to manufacture its products in close proximity to its distribution channels, and within close reach of major markets, to reduce supply chains all round. It’s currently expanding three factories in Hungary, China and Mexico; opened a new factory in Vietnam in April; opened its second distribution centre in Europe last year; and will open its second distribution centre in Asia in 2025.

There’s no mention in this announcement of current or planned tariffs from the US on products imported from other countries (including Denmark), but CEO Niels B. Christiansen has said previously that the LEGO Group will ‘find ways to deal with’ the situation should it arise. The company did not respond to queries from CoStar regarding the impact of tariffs in the context of this new centre, however.

The LEGO Group expects the new regional distribution centre – which will be operated by a third-party logistics company – to create more than 300 jobs when it opens in 2027, while the Virginia factory will apparently create more than 1,700 jobs in the region.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
