Light blue LEGO Classic Space airtanks are coming this summer

The LEGO Group is gradually expanding its roster of Classic Space astronauts one piece at a time, with light blue airtanks officially confirmed for release this summer.

A light blue Classic Space torso popped up as part of a recent LEGO DREAMZzz Build-a-Minifigure selection in LEGO Stores, but without the corresponding helmet and airtanks to match. That’s a strategy we’ve seen from the LEGO Group before, with the purple, dark blue and green astronauts only able to be fully completed by picking up multiple sets and minifigures.

In this case, the light blue airtanks will hit shelves in the newly-revealed 21359 Italian Riviera, which debuts on August 7 for LEGO Insiders (and August 10 for everyone else) for £249.99 / $299.99 / €279.99. That’s a steep price to pay for a single piece, but given this isn’t a licensed set (and it’s not an element tied to a specific IP) chances are good that the airtanks will pop up on Pick a Brick eventually.

All we’re waiting on then is the helmet, as bright light blue legs are already pretty commonplace having appeared in at least 45 sets to date. (You can grab them on BrickLink for as little as 18p in the UK.) You’ll also need bright light blue hands to swap out for the yellow hands in the Build-a-Minifigure torso, but one Belgian BrickLink seller has nearly 8,000 of them in stock for 11p each, so no worries there.

While some Classic Space astronauts come readymade, such as the teal and pearl gold versions in 21358 Minifigure Vending Machine, others can only be assembled by hunting down the various individual pieces through a combination of specific sets, in LEGO Store Build-a-Minifigure towers and (where possible) through Pick a Brick.

The dark blue torso, for example, debuted in LEGO Stores last September, and the helmet and airtanks are now finally available in this summer’s LEGO DREAMZzz 71499 Mateo’s Spray Paint Truck. If and when the bright light blue helmet follows, we’ll be able to add another flavour of LEGO Classic Space astronaut to our collections – but for now, the airtanks in 21359 Italian Riviera at least bring us one step closer…

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
