Live-action Moana remake could affect future of LEGO Disney
A live-action remake of Moana has been announced, just as the character has been getting more focus in LEGO Disney.
Moana, which was released just seven years ago, is next up for a live-action Disney adaptation as announced earlier today, April 3, 2023.
“I’m deeply humbled and overcome with gratitude to bring the beautiful story of Moana to the live-action big screen,” said Dwayne Johnson, who will reprise his role as Maui.
“This story is my culture, and this story is emblematic of our people’s grace and warrior strength. I wear this culture proudly on my skin and in my soul, and this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reunite with Maui—inspired by the mana and spirit of my late grandfather, High Chief Peter Maivia—is one that runs very deep for me.
“I want to thank my partners at Disney for their strong commitment to this special endeavour because there is no better world for us to honour the story of our people, our passion, and our purpose than through the realm of music and dance, which is at the core of who we are as Polynesian people.”
From Aladdin to The Little Mermaid, the Moana remake is one of many under Disney’s banner. However, the character has been notably present in LEGO Disney since the animated film’s debut in 2016 in comparison to others from similar films.

In 2023 alone, there are four LEGO Disney sets with Moana with a polybag, BrickHeadz, a full set and her first minifigure in 43212 Disney Celebration Train.
In 2022, 2020 and 2017, Moana was included in LEGO sets too with only one appearance as a cameo and the rest as full sets. With the announcement of the live-action remake, there may be more opportunities for the LEGO Group to explore the character in the future, especially now that Moana has a minifigure. There’s also an animated Moana series coming to Disney+ that was recently confirmed to still be coming.
Whether or not the live-action version could receive any sets whenever it releases is unclear as not all these projects have received sets. However, the upcoming Peter Pan Disney+ 2023 series is one of the few to have a model thanks to 43220 Peter Pan & Wendy’s Storybook Adventure.
