The lore of LEGO Ideas' new castle and Classic Space minifigures

New Classic Space astronaut colours and Castle factions are about to launch, and the LEGO Ideas team behind them have come up with some lore.

LEGO Castle and Classic Space collectors will likely already have their eyes set on 21358 Minifigure Vending Machine ahead of its wide launch on June 4, or on June 1 for LEGO Insiders. It will be available for £149.99 / $179.99 / €169.99, complete with eight other minifigures to collect.

Ahead of the new minifigures, though, it would be worthwhile to learn the early draft of in-universe lore for the new factions and astronauts. This includes where they fit into the wider world of both themes, and comes straight from the designers of the new minifigures and LEGO Ideas set.

"The Krakens' inspiration was kind of House Greyjoy from Game of Thrones, more or less, so more seafaring without being pirates, and then the Griffins had specific inspiration that started as being from a Mediterranean kingdom, leaning more into mythological fantasy," explained LEGO Ideas design lead Jordan David Scott during a roundtable interview with Brick Fanatics and other LEGO fan media.

"Our rough, not confirmed lore is that they're rival factions. The Krakens are in the coastal areas, and then the Griffins live on the cliff sides, and they're at war with each other. It's up to you if you want to change that lore to be something completely different. We would encourage you, as always, to be creative."

The information, while only an early draft, will still be useful to figure out how to display the Krakens and Griffins in your LEGO Castle display relative to the other factions. It's hard not to desire a cliffside or seaside castle set for the two factions in the future, and this early lore provides plenty of inspiration for custom models.

Looking at the new teal and gold astronauts, the two new LEGO Classic Space colours have some lore to learn as well, relating to their jobs in the Classic Space organisation.

"I'm guessing the gold probably doesn't do much," proposed graphic designer Nathan Davis.

"They're in charge," added Jordan, noting that this lore was being brainstormed during the interview, unlike the Castle lore. "The teal one just eats donuts, maybe they're administrative, or they're in the canteen. They're the baristas making coffee.

It was also proposed that the gold astronauts might be working outside in the heat and sun, with their gold spacesuits able to keep them protected. This information should serve as a useful base to build future Classic Space lore from. For now, it's certainly not the final story for these astronauts, and that of Castle was stated to have more thought behind it.
