McLaren’s LEGO trophy didn’t last long after the podiums

A photo of the constructors’ LEGO Formula 1 trophy has appeared, showing that it didn’t survive very long in McLaren’s hands following the podiums.

The three podium finishers from the British Grand Prix at Silverstone were presented with LEGO trophies in the latest marketing stunt from the LEGO Group and Formula 1. LEGO Designer Samuel Liltorp Johnson explained in an interview that the builds were glued, having seen the antics that some of the drivers get up to with their trophies – but apparently that wasn’t enough.

A photo shared by Autosport on X shows the trophy lying in pieces on the floor, with what looks like at least three parts of it separate from the main body of the trophy. While McLaren driver Lando Norris has been known to break trophies in the past, with an overzealous champagne celebration in Hungary two years ago causing expensive damage to Red Bull’s Max Verstappen’s trophy, he doesn’t appear to be the culprit this time.

An unidentified McLaren team member appears to have been transporting the black constructors’ trophy, awarded to the team with the winning car in addition to the driver’s P1 trophy. That means that, in the case of the British Grand Prix this year, McLaren should have taken home three trophies, having won first and second place, as well as the constructors.

The constructors trophy would never make it home with McLaren, however, judging from this photo. The beauty of LEGO means that it can hopefully be repaired, but the current status of the trophy is unknown.

I write about all the very best fandoms – and that means LEGO, of course. Spending so much time looking at and talking about LEGO sets is dangerous for my bank balance, but the LEGO shelves are thriving. You win some, you lose some.
