New LEGO The Legend of Zelda set has sold me on the old one

The reveal of the latest LEGO The Legend of Zelda set has only made me love the older build more, finally selling me on the model.

The LEGO and The Legend of Zelda communities are understandably excited about the upcoming 77093 Ocarina of Time – The Final Battle following its reveal this week, but its debut has personally managed to sell me on the older set even more. 77093 Ocarina of Time – The Final Battle will be released four months before the retirement of 77092 Great Deku Tree 2-in-1, seemingly replacing the older model.

After passing on that original LEGO The Legend of Zelda set to see what the inevitable second model based on the franchise would be, I now find myself wanting more than ever to pick up 77092 Great Deku Tree 2-in-1 before it retires. As much as I greatly enjoy the contents of 77093 Ocarina of Time – The Final Battle, I can’t help but feel like, even considering the lower piece count and price, it doesn’t make as much of a statement on display as 77092 Great Deku Tree 2-in-1.

Admittedly, the higher piece count of 77092 Great Deku Tree 2-in-1 helps it to stand out, though 77093 Ocarina of Time – The Final Battle has considerably more vivid colours and action-packed content. 77092 Great Deku Tree 2-in-1 is much more serene by comparison, and it’s that part of The Legend of Zelda games that I have come to love.

From Wind Waker to Tears of the Kingdom, I have always enjoyed taking in the beauty of the world of Hyrule in The Legend of Zelda, and I love how the fantastical aspects have been captured in 77092 Great Deku Tree 2-in-1. I think that 77093 Ocarina of Time – The Final Battle isn’t as successful in this regard, focusing on the action of a boss fight that takes place in a mostly flat arena. It simply has a different goal, focusing on the action of The Legend of Zelda instead of the landscape, which it succeeds at.

At £259.99 / $299.99 / €299.99, 77092 Great Deku Tree 2-in-1 splits its focus across two games rather than one, being Ocarina of Time as well as Breath of the Wild. While you need to rebuild the model to fully depict either game, the additional side builds dedicated to each game are satisfactory to me, where I can happily leave it as one Deku Tree or the other. I’d even opt to use the spare parts for an additional model, as octane thermoplastic on Rebrickable has devised.

All that’s left is for me to decide whether to leave it displayed as the Deku Tree from Breath of the Wild or Ocarina of Time, but the reveal of 77093 Ocarina of Time – The Final Battle has made me appreciate the older LEGO The Legend of Zelda set either way.

Despite my thoughts, I’m sure I’ll ultimately end up purchasing 77093 Ocarina of Time – The Final Battle to display next to the Deku Tree, since it includes classic Zelda and Ganondorf. I enjoy what the model is doing, but it’s not as high a priority for me now as the retiring 77092 Great Deku Tree 2-in-1 is.

Having waited to see what was next for LEGO The Legend of Zelda, it’s clear that the older model is catering to my personal preferences more, even at a much higher price tag. Given that it is retiring soon, I’ll be looking out for any final discounts I can grab, such as the 13% reduction currently available at Amazon UK.

Those who prefer the more affordable 77093 Ocarina of Time – The Final Battle can secure their launch day copy now by pre-ordering it on LEGO.com.

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.
