Nintendo is making a live-action The Legend of Zelda movie

Following the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Nintendo has confirmed that they are working on a live-action The Legend of Zelda movie.

Nintendo has officially announced the development of a live-action The Legend of Zelda is starting with some funding provided by Sony Pictures Entertainment. The company’s cinematic debut came earlier this year with The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which went on to gross over $1 billion, making it an undoubtedly massive success.

The Legend of Zelda movie will be produced by Shigeru Miyamoto, Representative Director at Nintendo and Avi Arad, Chairman of Arad Productions Inc. and former CEO of Marvel Studios. Arad’s past work includes the two Spider-Verse films as well as all three Marvel Studios Spider-Man movies.

“I have been working on the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda for many years now with Avi Arad-san, who has produced many mega hit films,” writes Shigeru Miyamoto on the Nintendo Japan X (formerly Twitter) account. “I have asked Avi-san to produce this film with me, and we have now officially started the development of the film with Nintendo itself heavily involved in the production. It will take time until its completion, but I hope you look forward to seeing it.”

Unlike The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which was a partnership between Nintendo and Universal Pictures, The Legend of Zelda film is being produced by  Nintendo and Arad Productions Inc. and will be directed by Maze Runner director Wes Ball.

Sony Pictures Entertainment will be co-financing the movie and handling the worldwide theatrical distribution, but more than 50% of the movie is being financed by Nintendo.

The Legend of Zelda franchise’s most recent game, Tears of the Kingdom, sold 19.5 million copies by September 2023 and it remains one of Nintendo’s most iconic game series to date. Whether it will match Super Mario’s success in the film industry has yet to be seen and development of this new film may take some time.
