Only one full LEGO Star Wars Death Star II model has been released to date

The upcoming 40591 Death Star II micro-scale GWP will be only the second dedicated version of the full battle station to be released so far.

For such an iconic location, it may be surprising to learn that only one complete version of the fully-operational battle station from Return of the Jedi has been released as a LEGO Star Wars set to date. 10143 Death Star II was launched in 2005 as an Ultimate Collector Series build and clocked in at a whopping 3,447 pieces.

The original trilogy model featured the Death Star II with its signature internal superstructure exposed and a lethal blast of green energy emerging from its primary weapon’s dish. A tiny orbiting Star Destroyer helped give the set a sense of scale, but it definitely wasn’t the most visually-appealing LEGO Star Wars model to have ever been released.

Multiple versions of the first Death Star have dropped over the years, from the minifigure-compatible 10188 Death Star and 75159 Death Star to familiar movie scenes recreated in the likes of 75229 Death Star Escape and last year’s 75339 Death Star Trash Compactor Diorama.

However, although a full version of the second iteration of the battle station has only been released as one LEGO Star Wars model so far, that’s soon to change. This year’s May the 4th event will be kicking off in a few weeks, with the LEGO Group revealing that one of the 2023 GWP promotions will be 40591 Death Star II. The micro-scale model offers a much smaller version of the Empire’s fearsome weapon than 10143 Death Star II, but it does retain its green laser blast. The promotional set will also include its own display stand and a printed Return of the Jedi 40th anniversary brick.

There’s currently no word on how many pieces will be included in the free set, what the spending threshold will be for the GWP or the model’s specific availability dates.
