The Penguin could offer us a LEGO look at Gotham like never before

The Penguin trailer is full of dark alleys and shadowy corners from Gotham City – but that could be exactly what LEGO DC needs.

The LEGO DC theme has been undoubtedly slow over the last few years, with a potential explanation lying in the fact that the LEGO Group focuses new sets on franchises that produce new content. This unconfirmed assertion would explain why LEGO Marvel has sets coming out left, right, and centre based on the MCU, while the hit-and-miss DCEU lies dormant in terms of LEGO sets.

However, the success of The Batman (making three-quarters of a billion dollars at the worldwide box office and gaining a spot as the highest-grossing film of its release year, both globally and domestically) has spawned three spin-off TV shows: an untitled Arkham Asylum show, an untitled Gotham PD show, and, of course, The Penguin.

From the looks of. the trailer, The Penguin will be a gritty, crime-riddled show – exactly what you would expect from a show based on the dark world of Matt Reeves’ The Batman. This could offer inspiration for a different approach to Gotham City than we’ve ever seen before.

Instead of colourful comic-focused sets like 76180 Batman vs. The Joker: Batmobile Chase and 40453 Batman vs. The Penguin & Harley Quinn, we could get building sets with a more realistic presentation of the Batman’s home town. From the Penguin’s own attic base of operations to the decadent Iceberg Lounge.

In a similar vein to how LEGO Harry Potter has zoomed in on elements of Hogwarts Castle with minifigure-scaled sets that take a closer look at different sections of the castle, Gotham City could also now do well under a LEGO microscope.

Of course, this is all speculation and would depend on the success of the show itself. For LEGO DC fans who want more Batman sets, you know what to watch come 2024 when the show premieres.
