Archivists release a playable version of a cancelled LEGO Minecraft game
Minecraft archivists from Omniarchive have released a playable version of Brickcraftt, a cancelled LEGO Minecraft game from over a decade ago.
Brickcraft was once a collaboration between the LEGO Group and Mojang, the company behind Minecraft. It was once discussed on the very first episode of Bits N’ Bricks, the official LEGO podcast, stating that Brickcraft was in development years ago, but never got off the ground. Although there were early versions built, the project reportedly broke down in July 2012 due to disagreements between the LEGO Group and Mojang.
Being in development for less than a year, the early prototypes were not that advanced, but still offered something playable. Now, Minecraft archivists from Omniarchive, a website dedicated to preserving all official Minecraft content, have announced that they’ve published what they believe to be ‘one of, if not the last build ever’ of Brickcraft.
You can download and play it via this link, but it’s worth noting that it only works on NVIDIA graphics cards. To run the game, you’ll need to launch the server first and then you can launch the client to join with it. As well as working solo, it also features a working multiplayer. If you don’t run on NVIDIA, you can run it on AMD or Intel if you download a patched version of the shaders made by Grzesiek11.
The game was intended to have the same vast scope as the official Minecraft game but this early version is more limited in scope, dropping the player into a blocky biome, equipped with LEGO bricks to build their way through, much like the original Minecraft game. As well as this release from Omniarchive, others have made resource packs to make Minecraft LEGO-fied over the years, which is another way to blend the two worlds in one video game.
