Pressure mounts for LEGO Super Mario to introduce minifigures

The reveal of LEGO The Legend of Zelda 77092 Great Deku Tree 2-in-1 leaves just one Nintendo-based LEGO theme without minifigures.

77092 Great Deku Tree 2-in-1 comes complete with a collectible minifigure of Princess Zelda and not one, not two, but three minifigure versions of Link. This comes after LEGO Animal Crossing minifigures became the very first minifigures to be based on Nintendo characters – and leaving fans wanting more.

After all, this is not the first LEGO theme to be based on Nintendo characters. LEGO Super Mario has been running since 2020, but without any minifigures in sight, Instead, LEGO Super Mario uses buildable figures, better suited to the interactive, playable nature of the theme.

Now that we have minifigures based on both Zelda and Animal Crossing, however, the pressure is mounting for LEGO Super Mario minifigures too. Arguably, they would be easier to design that the humanoid animals from Animal Crossing. After all, LEGO Senior Design Manager Tara Wike did once say ‘never say never‘ on the topic of getting the plumber and co in minifigure form.

We’ve already had a look at what LEGO Super Mario minifigures could look like but official versions would be more than welcome at this stage. With a soft reboot of the theme coming this year, it might have been hoped that minifigures would feature but that appears to be an unfounded hope. You never know though, if LEGO The Legend of Zelda proves popular, perhaps we’ll get a LEGO Collectible Minifigures Nintendo series – or even fully-fledged LEGO Super Mario minifigure sets. We can dream!

I write about all the very best fandoms – and that means LEGO, of course. Spending so much time looking at and talking about LEGO sets is dangerous for my bank balance, but the LEGO shelves are thriving. You win some, you lose some.

it was a typical tone deaf exec decision to launch super mario in a different format anyway… it shows how little top managements in corporate companies know about the reality.
