LEGO has been sneaking the perfect LEGO Mario minifigure pieces into sets since 2021

LEGO Super Mario minifigures are still not on the table in Billund, but the LEGO Group has seemingly been sneaking the perfect pieces for a couple of characters into sets since 2021.

The LEGO Group last year shuffled the deck on its LEGO Super Mario theme, bringing forward the retirement dates for its three starter courses (and their corresponding digital figures required for the expansion sets). That inspired a faint glimmer of hope in some corners of the community that the LEGO Group and Nintendo might finally be gearing up to phase out its course-building sets in favour of minifigures.

The rumour mill has now all but extinguished that hope with news of three revamped starter packs on the way in summer 2024, ahead of the confirmed debut of LEGO Mario Kart in 2025 – which looks sure to be modelled around the oversized digital figures. So we’re back to square one, which is to say a universe in which we never receive official LEGO Super Mario minifigures. But no matter: you can always have a go at making your own.

That’s exactly what many members of the community have been doing for years now, and these latest versions from redditor Wild-Canadian are among the best yet – at least where purists are concerned. You can buy custom-printed and moulded LEGO Super Mario minifigures on the aftermarket, but if you want to assemble your own Mario Bros from only official LEGO parts, this is basically as good as it gets.

Both Mario and Luigi use Pinocchio’s head from 71038 Disney 100, while Mario’s torso comes from the Mickey Mouse minifigure in 2021’s 10775 Mickey Mouse & Donald Duck’s Farm. His dual-moulded legs were included with 71038 Disney 100’s Oswald the Rabbit, and Luigi’s torso and legs were both originally used for 71037 Series 24’s Carrot Mascot.

In short, the LEGO Group has seemingly been smuggling the perfect LEGO Mario Bros minifigure pieces into sets for the past three years. Whether that was deliberate or just a happy coincidence is something we’ll probably never know, but either way, this is the ideal blueprint for plugging the gap for these two characters. That said: good luck making your own purist LEGO Bowser minifigure…

For even better results with this LEGO Mario design, you could also consider swapping out his dual-moulded legs for standard mid-sized legs in blue – which can be had for pennies at BrickLink – to better illustrate the height difference next to Luigi. And before you say anything: let’s just all agree to pretend that Mario’s favourite snack is wheat.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
