PSA: There’s no need to panic about the micro LEGO NINJAGO City sets

People are panicking about the potential cost of the quarter of micro LEGO NINJAGO City sets – but there might not be any reason to.

Everybody, take a deep breath. A listing on LEGO China Weibo has suggested that the four LEGO NINJAGO City micro sets can be obtained in exchange for 6,500 LEGO Insiders points, seemingly suggesting that the four micro builds will be LEGO Insiders Rewards, rather than gifts-with-purchase as first thought, much like the just-completed Houses of the World series. At 6,500 points a pop, that would equate to around £800 / $1000 – per set.

A steep sum, to be sure – but hope is not lost. It’s worth noting that LEGO Insiders works a lot different in China than it does in the rest of the world. There are therefore no guarantees that the four builds will be available as Insider Rewards and therefore a potentially £3,200 combined spend. Ultimately, the LEGO Group has not yet confirmed when or how these four LEGO NINJAGO City models are coming, so it’s wise not to panic just yet. Products numbered 40XXX can often be either a reward or a GWP, so we will just need to wait and see.

If the quartet are GWPs, does that mean they’ll be cheap? Well, probably not. Judging from what we’ve seen so far, the four mini-builds are roughly the same size as the Houses of the World series and arguably even more detailed, with all the colour and unique shapes we know and love from LEGO NINJAGO City sets.

With that in mind, Houses of the World sets came free with minimum spends of £220 / $250 / €250 each. To get all four, you would therefore need to spend at least £880 / $1000 / €1000 on LEGO sets (in four £220 / $250 / €250 chunks). A pricey amount, for sure, especially if you’re keen to get all four in your collection. Some GWPs are also tied to specific themes, although we’d imagine if the LEGO Group tied these sets to a specific theme, the threshold would drop slightly accordingly.

All in all, it’s worth remembering that we don’t actually know how the micro LEGO NINJAGO City sets will be available. The Insiders system works differently in different countries so, for now, it’s best to sit tight and wait for international details for the sets to be confirmed by the LEGO Group, before jumping to any conclusions. Phew.

I write about all the very best fandoms – and that means LEGO, of course. Spending so much time looking at and talking about LEGO sets is dangerous for my bank balance, but the LEGO shelves are thriving. You win some, you lose some.

Nothing has been confirmed at the time of writing. I wouldn’t be surprised if one was suddenly launched with the summer sets’ launch either in June or August but we’ll report as soon as we know for sure.
