Ryan Gosling officially confirmed to star in Shawn Levy’s standalone Star Wars film

While rumours swirled about the Barbie star coming to Star Wars, Ryan Gosling is now officially confirmed to be starring in Shawn Levy’s standalone film.

Star Ryan Gosling and director Shawn Levy took to the stage at Star Wars Celebration Japan 2025 to announce Star Wars: Starfighter. The film will head into production this autumn and is slated to release on May 31, 2027. It’s set five years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker but Gosling will star as a brand-new character.

The events of the movie are thought to stand entirely separate from anything we’ve seen so far from a galaxy far, far away.

“This is a standalone,” said Levy on stage at the event, as reported by the Hollywood Reporter. “It’s not a prequel, not a sequel. It’s a new adventure. It’s set in a period of time that we haven’t seen explored yet.”

You might well have seen some of Levy’s work recently, as he directed and produced Marvel’s hit Deadpool & Wolverine. His standalone Star Wars movie is one of several theatrical titles still in development at Lucasfilm, including films by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, James Mangold, Taika Waititi, and a new trilogy by Simon Kinberg.

Although the release of the movie is still two years away, if it did spawn any LEGO Star Wars sets, this would be the first character that Gosling has played that has become an official minifigure.

Also announced at Star Wars Celebration is a new Darth Maul animated series starring Sam Witwer and a brand-new LEGO set, 75434 K-2SO, available to pre-order now.

I write about all the very best fandoms – and that means LEGO, of course. Spending so much time looking at and talking about LEGO sets is dangerous for my bank balance, but the LEGO shelves are thriving. You win some, you lose some.
