The safe money is on LEGO Indiana Jones summer 2023 sets

Indiana Jones 5 finally has a firm release date, and the safe money says LEGO Indy will return alongside it in summer 2023.

The long-gestating sequel to Kingdom of the Crystal Skull will arrive in cinemas on June 30, 2023, with Harrison Ford back in the title role. Its release date was announced at the Lucasfilm showcase at Star Wars Celebration, which speaks even further to the chances of the LEGO Indiana Jones theme making a comeback alongside the premiere of the new film.

That’s because the LEGO Group and Lucasfilm are so intertwined at this point – through the evergreen Star Wars theme first and foremost – that it feels like a no-brainer for the pair to pounce on the potential for new Indy products. The original Indiana Jones sets launched in the late ‘00s, alongside the critically-maligned Crystal Skull, and took inspiration from all four movies.

The sets and minifigures were pretty decent for their time, and even spawned a TT Games LEGO video game (but then, what franchise didn’t in the late ‘00s/early ‘10s?). A full decade-and-change on, though, the LEGO Group’s new design standards and techniques could breathe new life even into well-trodden ground, giving it the perfect excuse to revisit the classic movies alongside Indy 5.

This is still only speculation at this stage, but let’s face it: if any LEGO theme seems likely to make a comeback alongside a new instalment in its accompanying franchise, it’s Indiana Jones. (Which means it’s not Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The Angry Birds Movie or Trolls World Tour. Go figure.)

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
