See LEGO Speed Champions Lightning McQueen next to its predecessors

As reviews for LEGO Speed Champions 77255 Lightning McQueen go live, here’s a look at the latest iteration next to its predecessors.

77255 Lightning McQueen is due to launch on January 1, 2026, but reviews (including ours) have started to go live as a few people have been given early copies of the LEGO Speed Champions set. LEGO content creator just2good has dug into her LEGO archives to see the progression of the character in brick-built form.

Putting the LEGO DUPLO Lightning McQueen next to the brick-built version from 2011’s 8484 Ultimate Build Lightning McQueen and the 2026 Speed Champions edition shows the evolution of the animated car. Size-wise, 77255 Lightning McQueen sits squarely in the middle, but it packs more detail and accuracy into the build than those that have come before.

Admittedly, a lot of that comes from stickers, but the printed tyres are a neat touch, as well as the first attempt (and a successful one at that) at a buildable grin on his front bumper, rather than the printed versions on the other two cars.

For Cars fans, this direct comparison shows exactly what new areas 77255 Lightning McQueen caters to. I write about all the very best fandoms – and that means LEGO, of course. Spending so much time looking at and talking about LEGO sets is dangerous for my bank balance, but the LEGO shelves are thriving. You win some, you lose some.
