Six LEGO sets we need from Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny

The LEGO Group has yet to reveal any sets based on Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, but there are at least six potential products we need to see from the fifth entry in the franchise.

LEGO Indiana Jones made a triumphant comeback in April with three (of four planned) sets based on the original trilogy of films. (Sorry, Crystal Skull fans.) And you’d have been forgiven for assuming that was only in anticipation of a product range based on this summer’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, not least because four sets were rumoured to be on the way.

They’ve as yet failed to materialise – even while the LEGO Group continues to tease Dial of Destiny sets – and the further away we get from the movie’s premiere, the more it looks like the company is passing up the opportunity to produce Indy 5 models altogether. That would be a crying shame, because having now had chance to watch the movie, it feels ripe for a LEGO set… or six. Check out our ideas for LEGO Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny sets below.

Major spoilers follow for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.

6 – Liberating the Lance of Longinus

The fifth Indy movie takes an 80-year-old Harrison Ford and places him at the heart of the action, but not before de-ageing the veteran actor for its opening sequence. It’s 1944, and the Nazis have captured Indiana Jones and Oxford professor Basil Shaw, who are attempting to liberate the fabled Lance of Longinus from Nazi control.

It all culminates in a bombastic sequence aboard (and above) a moving steam train, which is the first of many ways in which the archaeologist gets around in the Dial of Destiny. A locomotive and carriage full of stolen antiquities would make for a perfect LEGO set – we know the LEGO Group loves trains – and this would be a great chance to reuse the new ‘young’ Indy minifigure.

5 – The chase through Tangier

Watching Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, it’s hard not to think how perfectly this movie is set up for accompanying LEGO sets. That’s nowhere clearer than in Tangier, where Indy tracks down his goddaughter Helena Shaw – portrayed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge – and tries to stop her selling off half of Archimedes’ Antikythera (the eponymous dial) to actual Nazis.

A classic chase scene follows, as Indy, Helena and her sidekick Teddy Kumar pursue Mads Mikkelsen’s Jürgen Voller through the streets of Morocco (all while being hunted themselves by Helena’s former fiancé). These are the perfect ingredients for a LEGO set, and it’s a recipe familiar to Indiana Jones in particular: two cars, a rickshaw, motorbikes, market stalls and plenty of minifigures.

4 – Searching for the Graphikos

The hunt for the second half of the dial takes Indy, Helena and Teddy to Greece, where they seek the help of Antonio Banderas’s Renaldo to dive down to a shipwreck in the Aegean Sea. The LEGO Group is no stranger to boats (City has its very own deep sea diving subtheme this summer), and Renaldo’s vessel could offer a similarly detailed build to the BrickLink Designer Program’s The 910010 Great Fishing Boat.

We’ve also seen LEGO designers experiment with sets both above and below water in the Avatar: The Way of Water range, and that approach would work nicely here, incorporating both Renaldo’s boat and the shipwreck below. Throw in Indy and Helena in their diving suits, and Voller on board the ship, and you’ve got the makings of a great set.

3 – The tomb of Archimedes

While Archimedes’ tomb doesn’t present quite the same potential for a LEGO set as, say, the Temple of the Golden Idol from Raiders of the Lost Ark (or indeed, the lost tomb from the same film), there’s still plenty to work with here. Representing methane gas in LEGO form would be tricky, but the rocky structures, ramp down to the tomb and the giant bugs crawling from the walls would be easy to recreate.

Plus, the LEGO Group is no stranger to taking creative liberties with its sets, and would no doubt find plenty of ways to pack interactive features into Archimedes’ tomb. This could easily be the pocket money-priced set of the wave, too, offering a cheap and easy way to pick up the movie’s main characters.

2 – Voller’s plane

While revealing his grand plan to go back in time and assassinate Hitler – for all the wrong reasons – Voller takes off in a huge military plane, which in itself would make for a great LEGO set. (As long as the LEGO Group carefully avoided any Nazi imagery, of course – which may or may not have been a sticking point for those four rumoured sets.)

This is the vehicle which also takes Indy and Helena back to 212 BC – continental drift takes the dial just a little bit off-course – and sets up the movie’s outrageous final act, so would be fundamental to any LEGO Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny product range. But it would need to be accompanied by another set, too…

1 – Meeting Archimedes

(Unsurprisingly, there are no images of Archimedes online yet.)

Voller doesn’t go into the ancient past alone: he’s pursued by Teddy, who’s commandeered his own plane. It’s the means by which Indy and Helena manage to return to 1969 at the end of the film, and would pair really nicely with Voller’s plane, to the point that they could even be part of the same set. But we reckon it would be wiser to split them up, because there’d be more to this one than just Teddy’s plane.

We’re referring, of course, to Indy’s meeting with Archimedes during the Siege of Syracuse. The archaeologist has spent his entire life researching history, but in the final moments of Dial of Destiny, he gets to live it. As well as Teddy’s plane, this set could also include the first-ever minifigure of Archimedes, along with a couple of Roman soldiers and a ballista to reinforce the setting (and serve that audience longing for historical LEGO sets).

Put simply: Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is ripe for LEGO sets. Why we haven’t seen them yet is a question for another day, but if any or all of the above materialises in the next few weeks or months, we’ll be very happy. Let us know in the comments below if there are any other LEGO Indy 5 sets you’d like to see.

For a more immediate LEGO Indiana Jones fix, 77012 Fighter Plane Chase, 77013 Escape from the Lost Tomb and 77015 Temple of the Golden Idol are all available now.

Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
