LEGO teases Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny sets – but where are they?

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is in UK cinemas today – and the LEGO Group is still teasing sets based on the new movie, even while there are no signs of them anywhere.

Three LEGO Indiana Jones sets launched earlier this year, bringing the whip-cracking adventurer back to shelves for the first time since 2009. Those models only cover two of the first four Indy movies, though – Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Last Crusade – with a fourth set based on The Temple of Doom canned at the last minute.

At the time, most of us assumed the LEGO Group had resurrected the theme ahead of a full wave of sets inspired by Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, the fifth and perhaps final entry in the silver-screen franchise. But the James Mangold-helmed sequel arrives in UK cinemas today, and theatres worldwide from Friday, and rumours of four new Dial of Destiny sets have yet to materialise.

That hasn’t stopped the LEGO Group talking about the new movie, though, and in a way that suggests related products really will be forthcoming sometime soon. Type ‘LEGO Indiana Jones’ into Google, and the meta description for LEGO.com reads: “Buy LEGO Indiana Jones toys and follow the legendary hero into his latest adventure.”

At first glance, you might consider that boilerplate flavour text hooking 77012 Fighter Plane Chase, 77013 Escape from the Lost Tomb and 77015 Temple of the Golden Idol to the Dial of Destiny, without explicitly mentioning the five-quel. But click through to LEGO.com and hit the ‘Learn more’ tab at the top of Indy’s category page, and you’ll find the following passage…

“Discover LEGO Indiana Jones sets that bring back all the drama, humour and nostalgia of the idolised franchise to celebrate the dashing professor’s return in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny!” That’s directly namedropping the new movie, putting it front and centre in consumers’ minds – while seemingly not giving them any merchandise to go along with it.

Of course, it could simply be that the LEGO Group is happy to squeeze as much nostalgia as it can from the new movie, while only catering specifically to two-thirds of the original trilogy. But that doesn’t track with a pattern established as recently as last year through LEGO Avatar, a licensed theme that also started by revisiting the original movie in the franchise a couple of months before its sequel hit cinemas.

The Avatar: The Way of Water sets didn’t actually arrive on shelves until January 2023, a month or so after the three-hour epic obliterated the box office. If the LEGO Indiana Jones theme follows suit, we’d expect any Dial of Destiny sets to debut in August 2023. But with substantial rumours of any such products perilously thin on the ground right now, we wouldn’t put money on it.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is in cinemas now in the UK, and premieres in the US on June 30, 2023. The three classic LEGO Indiana Jones sets 77012 Fighter Plane Chase, 77013 Escape from the Lost Tomb and 77015 Temple of the Golden Idol are all available now.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
