Sonic the Hedgehog live-action spin-off Knuckles begins production

Paramount has confirmed that production has now begun on Knuckles, a live-action spin-off from the big screen Sonic the Hedgehog movies.

When Sonic the Hedgehog arrived on cinema screens in 2020, few believed that the video game to film adaptation would be a big success, following an early trailer that featured a less-than-impressive CG version of the character. Fast forward two years and the original movie went on to gross in excess of $319 million and spawned a sequel released last year that was even more successful.

A third entry in the series is due to arrive in December 2024, but in the meantime Paramount Pictures has confirmed via Twitter that production has begun on a live-action spin-off for its streaming service, Paramount +. Voiced by Idris Elba as the bad-boy echidna from Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Knuckles has now started shooting, with the first episode of the upcoming show to be directed by Jeff Fowler, who helmed the first two movies.

The Knuckles series is set between the events of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and 3 and will feature Elba’s character agreeing to train Wade Wipple (Adam Pally) as his protége, passing on the ways of the echidna warrior. Wipple was a bumbling police offer in the first two Sonic the Hedgehog films who became entangled in Dr. Robotnik’s nefarious schemes.

Recent set descriptions for upcoming rumoured LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog sets suggested that a range of models would be arriving in August 2023, although that story ultimately proved to be an April Fool’s Day prank by its source. However, a follow-up rumour has since stated that bigfigs may be coming back as part of a line-up of LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog models said to be launching this summer, although those details should definitely be treated as pure speculation for now.
