Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has a LEGO Marvel universe

There’s a LEGO universe in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse according to a core member of the Marvel film’s cast.

Jake Johnson, voice of Peter B. Parker in Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse has revealed that the upcoming animated movie features a LEGO universe. The trailers confirm that the multiverse and its exploration will play a huge part in the movie, and now we can add a brick-built universe to the list.

In an interview with Fandango, Johnson stated “They’re pushing so many boundaries that at times I wonder what they’re doing now. Like the LEGO world was really neat.”

The interview goes on to describe how one of the characters jumps into the universe, possibly as part of a montage similar to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

It’s entirely possible that this LEGO universe won’t be officially licensed in partnership with the LEGO Group but instead, be made of similar-looking bricks.

However, given the existing partnership between the LEGO Group and Marvel as well as Sony, this might be an official LEGO universe complete with minifigures. Either way, it seems likely to be a tongue-in-cheek reference to writers Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who directed The LEGO Movie and worked on its sequel too.

There’s not much longer to wait to see the extent of this LEGO universe in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse as the film releases on June 2, 2023, in the UK and the US. In 2021, an animator imagined what a LEGO crossover with the Spider-Verse franchise could look like. Earlier this year, the trailer for the Spider-Verse sequel has been recreated with digital bricks too.

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.
