Star Wars author Timothy Zahn reveals his favourite LEGO Thrawn set

The legendary Star Wars author responsible for bringing Grand Admiral Thrawn to life has revealed his favourite LEGO set featuring the Chiss Imperial.

Speaking to YouTuber Nicki Bricks at GalaxyCon in San Jose, Timothy Zahn – who penned the esteemed Heir to the Empire trilogy in the 1990s, which introduced Thrawn to Star Wars canon – said he’s aware of both LEGO Grand Admiral Thrawn minifigures released so far, and even owns the rarer of the two.

“One is the Rebels one, I have that one, and the other one is the Ahsoka [minifigure],” he said. “I’ve seen it, I don’t have it.” The first Thrawn minifigure debuted in 2017’s Star Wars Rebels set 75170 The Phantom, and at the peak of its value commanded triple figures on the aftermarket. A new-condition version will now set you back at least £50 on BrickLink.

The price has fallen slightly as a result of a new Thrawn minifigure arriving in last summer’s Star Wars: Ahsoka set 75385 Ahsoka Tano’s Duel on Peridea. New examples of that minifigure, which includes dual-moulded legs and a medium blue rather than azure blue skin tone, are available on BrickLink from around £9. Nicki asked Zahn to choose his favourite Thrawn set between the two.

“I have always been partial to the Ghost and Phantom,” the author revealed. “I like the engineering they did on the design in the show. So with my physics and engineering background, you know, I lean in that direction. But this is a good one too,” he added, pointing to the Ahsoka series build. You can get your hands on that one – and its other exclusive LEGO Star Wars minifigures – right now for £49.99 / $54.99 / €54.99 at LEGO.com.

75170 The Phantom is much pricier by comparison, with new and sealed copies starting from £133 on BrickLink

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
