The history of LEGO Ideas and Disney

With the results of the latest LEGO Ideas review, there’s another fan-inspired Disney model on the way, joining a long list of models.

LEGO Ideas and Disney have quite the history as projects based on their iconic characters and stories keep getting to 10,000 votes, as picked and submitted by users on the platform. Not counting the countless unapproved LEGO Ideas Disney projects, there’s still a lot of crossover between LEGOIdeas and Disney, more than just fan-inspired sets.

In light of another LEGO Ideas Disney set being confirmed for production as part of the second 2022 review results, here’s a look at the history of LEGO Ideas and Disney, including when the platform was used for another kind of model.

Released sets

Looking at the officially-released LEGO Ideas Disney sets, there are five with two available now. It started with 21303 WALL-E in 2015 as submitted by Pixar animator and director Angus MacLane. After a three-year gap, 21314 TRON: Legacy was then launched bringing the retro franchise to the world of LEGO as inspired by the 2010 film. In 2019, 21317 Steamboat Willie celebrated a classic era of Disney animation with a set that is perfect for the 100th anniversary of the company in 2023, should you happen to have it.

While those sets are now all retired, you can still pick up 21326 Winnie the Pooh and 21330 Home Alone from 2021. Notably, 21330 Home Alone is based on the movie distributed by 20th Century Fox. However, as that company was acquired and renamed by Disney in 2019, that makes 21330 Home Alone a LEGO Ideas Disney set since it was approved for production less than a year after the deal was complete.

150th BrickHeadz

LEGO Ideas has also been used as a platform to vote on potential future LEGO Disney sets too. In 2020, a fan vote for the 150th BrickHeadz was launched on LEGO Ideas with choices including one for Minecraft, Lilo & Stitch, Star Wars and Jaws.

After the vote, it was revealed that Star Wars had won the vote with 40539 Ahsoka Tano being the result of the fan vote. While it’s not a LEGO Ideas set, the platform still played a crucial role in its journey to becoming an official BrickHeadz model.

Upcoming sets

At the time of writing, there are two LEGO Ideas Disney sets in production, one from the second 2022 review and the other from the first 2023 review. These include Hocus Pocus – The Sanderson Sisters’ Cottage by Ambery Veyt based on the 1993 film produced by Walt Disney Pictures.

More recently, The Nightmare Before Christmas by Simon Scott was approved for a LEGO Ideas set with the film also released in 1993. Both celebrate their 30th anniversary in 2023 with Hocus Pocus in July and The Nightmare Before Christmas in October. However, the release dates for these models have yet to be revealed as they are still in production.
