The LEGO SMART Brick has a ‘built-in microphone’

Descriptions for the LEGO Star Wars SMART Play sets have revealed that the SMART Brick has a microphone, but it won’t be active out of the box.

The LEGO Group made the three March 1, 2026, SMART Play sets available for pre-order earlier today, revealing the full gallery of images and listing for each set. Scroll down to the description and on all three, you’ll find some new information regarding the SMART Brick. This information ranges from an app needed to update the technology to a microphone built inside each SMART Brick.

The text for the built-in microphone is as follows:

MIC DROP – Includes a deactivated, built-in microphone for potential future play features; activation will require both your permission and a firmware update

While each SMART Brick features a built-in microphone for potential future use, it won’t be active and therefore record you straight out of the box. It will require an update and your permission to do so. It’s important to be aware of the technology inside the SMART Brick, but note that this only concerns the larger element, not the SMART Tags or SMART Minifigures, which have less technology inside them.

The permission to use the microphone seems likely to be given via the SMART ASSIST app, also detailed in the description, but this has not been confirmed. Despite being advertised as screen-free, SMART Play will come with an app to ‘unlock more from the SMART Play system’, including troubleshooting, controlling sound levels and downloading updates. Here’s the exact text from the product descriptions:

LEGO SMART ASSIST APP – Help children unlock more from the SMART Play system with the SMART Assist App; get started, troubleshoot, control sound levels and download updates for enhanced play

The final portion of the set descriptions mentions that the battery life of the SMART Brick is 45 minutes long, but insight from interviews and events reveals that this isn’t the full story. Brickset states that the battery life is only 45 minutes during extremely thorough use, with lights and sounds happening all the time, and that the SMART Brick will then need around two hours to fully recharge.

Pre-orders for all three LEGO Star Wars sets are open now, launching on March 1 to debut SMART Play.

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.
