Towards the end of 2021, Nintendo confirmed the first major details for the Super Mario movie being made in partnership with Illumination. As well as a cast list, the release date for the film was announced as December 21 2022 in the US with other regional dates pending
With Cinemacon 2022 taking place this weekend, an event that has already revealed more details for the upcoming Spiderverse movies, Shigeru Miyamoto has seen fit to update us on the movie’s progress via Nintendo’s social media accounts.
The release date for the film has been pushed back from December 2022 to April 7, 2023, in North America and April 28 in Japan.
Whether the LEGO Group has any LEGO Super Mario sets planned for the movie has not been confirmed. However, provided there are plans in place, we may see a similar approach as with the LEGO Minions models based on Minions: The Rise of Gru. When that was delayed, the accompanying builds were released normally with one already retired before the film had a chance to land in cinemas.
That’s only speculation and no LEGO sets inspired by the Super Mario movie have been confirmed. At the time of writing, the next wave for LEGO Super Mario includes a new Princess Peach interactive figure and her castle.
