Two new LEGO Technic sets of the same F1 car are coming in March 2024

In the surest sign yet that the LEGO Group wants to deliver similar experiences for different budgets, two new LEGO Technic sets of the same Formula 1 car are coming in March.

One of those is the wallet-friendly 42165 Mercedes-AMG F1 W14 E Performance Pull-Back, a €26.99 set that matches the price tag of its LEGO Speed Champions contemporary 76919 2023 McLaren Formula 1 Car. The other is the comparatively wallet-busting 42171 Mercedes-AMG F1 W14 E Performance, a souped-up version of the same racer that definitely does not include a pullback motor – but will retail for €219.99.

Both of these new LEGO Technic March 2024 sets have been revealed by online retailer JB Spielwaren. Check out all the details we have so far on them below, and look out for confirmation of their international pricing very soon – when sets are revealed by third-party retailers, they typically pop up at LEGO.com within a day or two.

By far the smaller of the two newly-revealed sets, 42165 Mercedes-AMG F1 W14 E Performance Pull-Back is also the more playable of the two fresh Formula 1 Technic models.

At 240 pieces and designed with a younger audience in mind, 42165 Mercedes-AMG F1 W14 E Performance Pull-Back has all the major details of the real race car – even down to the sponsors – but with some simplified shaping and a pull-back feature. There’s not quite as much to discover as in its bigger counterpart, but for those new to Technic or on a budget, it could be the winner come March.

42171 Mercedes-AMG F1 W14 E Performance

Price: €219.99 Pieces: 1,642 Release date: March 1, 2024

If the pullback version isn’t doing it for you, and you have the budget and space to spare – as well as experience with LEGO Technic – you can pick up a 1:8 scale model of the very same Mercedes F1 racer from March. 42171 Mercedes-AMG F1 W14 E Performance has 1,642 pieces and offers an authentic recreation of the car and its mechanisms.

Early images from JB highlight what appear to be new tyres, an interesting colour scheme and a removable section to admire the engine. We’ll have to wait for the official reveal to learn more about its functions, though.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
