LEGOLAND California is offering one family the chance to live in its park forever

LEGOLAND California is giving one family the chance to live in its theme park forever – but you’ll need deep pockets to make it happen.

The park has launched a public auction designed to raise money for charity, with a tantalising prize up for grabs: the winner will see themselves and up to 10 family members (and even a pet or two) recreated at Miniland scale by LEGO Master Model Builders, and will then have their likenesses placed on permanent display within LEGOLAND California’s new Miniland San Diego.

“It’s the only way most San Diegans can afford a beach home,” Merlin Entertainments director of public relations Julie Estrada joked to the San Diego Union-Tribune. “And it’s a way to never age – you’ll never need plastic surgery. You’re taken care of every day; our model builders go through LEGOLAND every day, so you have house cleaners. There’s even a playroom inside, and you can see San Francisco and Las Vegas (Minilands) from your home.”

The four-bedroom brick-built house was designed with help from celebrity realtor Allie Lutz, and boasts ‘durable Danish construction’ and ‘plastic countertops, walls and furniture’. The auction is based on a similar initiative from LEGOLAND Windsor several years ago, which saw one lucky family’s home recreated at Miniland scale.

“We thought that was a really cool idea, and with San Diego Miniland, we’ve had so much good feedback that we thought: ‘Wouldn’t it be amazing to have a house built specifically for you where you can see all of San Diego in no more than 15 minutes?’” Estrada said. “You can see Petco Park, the convention centre, Old Town, the beaches, all the different landmarks, from this home.”

While the Windsor contest wasn’t designed as a charity fundraiser, all proceeds from LEGOLAND California’s auction will go to Merlin’s Magic Wand Foundation. A non-profit partnered with LEGOLAND owners Merlin Entertainments (a subsidiary of the LEGO Group’s parent company Kirkbi), the foundation arranges ‘Magical Days Out’ at Merlin parks for kids ‘facing challenging circumstances’.

At the time of writing, the auction has attracted a total of 28 bids – and you’ll need to dig deep to get your name in the hat, as the current bid stands at a healthy $8,918. The auction ends on August 7, so you’ve got roughly a week left to enter. Estrada says LEGOLAND California hopes to install the winning family by September 16, in time for the park’s ‘Brick-or-Treat’ Halloween celebrations.

“The winner’s home will be redecorated during the holidays, where we will put up Christmas lights and decorate for Halloween,” Estrada said. “It should be playful, because that’s what we are all about.”

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
