Watford’s LEGO Store has now closed permanently

The LEGO Store in Watford has now closed its doors permanently, almost a decade after it originally opened.

The closure of the store – which first opened to customers in December 2012 – was announced back in May, and a sign in its window revealed that its final day of trading would be September 11, 2022. A quick glance at the calendar tells us that it’s now shut up shop for good, representing yet another departure from Watford’s Atria shopping centre.

“Within LEGO Retail, we’re constantly assessing our store portfolio to ensure we provide the best LEGO experience for our shoppers and fans,” the LEGO Group said in May. “We understand this will be sad and frustrating news for our local LEGO fans living within the Watford area and we want to say a huge thank you for visiting and shopping in the LEGO Store Watford over the years, as we know this also includes many loyal adult fans of LEGO.”

Staff at the Watford store have apparently been offered either redundancy or a position at a LEGO Store of their choice in the UK. The closest stores are in Milton Keynes and London (at Stratford, Westfield and Leicester Square), all of which would be a relatively long commute for any staff currently based in Watford.

While one LEGO Store closes, however, others are still opening worldwide – including Ireland’s first-ever store in Dublin, and the newly-refurbished store in Leicester Square, which has now reclaimed the title of the world’s largest LEGO Store.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
