We need more from these LEGO 71048 Series 27 minifigures

While there are all kinds of amazing characters included in LEGO 71048 Series 27, here are the minifigures and themes we need even more of.

LEGO 71048 Series 27 will be dropping on January 1, 2025, bringing with it yet another diverse mix of 12 unique minifigure characters. The upcoming CMF includes all sorts of highly-desirable faces that are worth picking up, such as the Wolfpack Beastmaster, Jetpack Racer, Steampunk Inventor, Astronomer Kid, Cat Lover and Pirate Quartermaster.

What’s more, 71048 Series 27’s minifigure selection also gives us a taste of many different potential themes, concepts and characters that we’d like to see expanded beyond next year’s CMF offerings. With that in mind, here’s what we’re hoping will spin out of the latest collection of must-have minifigures.

1 – Steampunk Inventor

Featuring some of the best design and printing of any of the January 1 LEGO CMF selection, the Steampunk Inventor is one of the most outstanding minifigures in 71048 Series 27. In addition, the character comes with a wrist-mounted gadget, with the armour element in gold for the first time, plus a burst of ice cream steam.

Steampunk-inspired submissions from fan designers often pop up on LEGO Ideas, but a full theme based on the Victorian-era concept could prove to be quite fascinating. From bulky riveted machines to flying copper contraptions, the building possibilities for such a concept could be endless.

2 – Bogeyman

Featuring a large, printed head with a wide, toothy smile, the Bogeyman really needs to try a little bit harder to be truly scary. Instead the LEGO CMF character comes off as more cute and friendly, similar to those creatures seen in the likes of Monsters Inc.

While those hoping for a full-on revival of the ill-fated LEGO Monster Fighters theme may have to keep on waiting, we could always do with more interesting minifigure creatures. Whether that might be a dedicated Halloween CMF or an all-new theme based on things that go bump in the night, we’d definitely snap up more creepy characters if they were to become available.

3 – Jetpack Racer

One element featured on the Jetpack Racer minifigure included in 71048 Series 27 was originally designed for another ill-fated theme. The CMF character was developed with a different coloured helmet for LEGO VIDIYO, but abandoned once the range was cancelled in 2022.

While we’d like to see the helmet with transparent visor piece appear in more sets, there’s also the tantalising thought of what a potential LEGO Jetpack Racers theme might look like. We’re thinking of a future sci-fi sport with multiple teams, stadiums and a full-on video game – the sky really is the limit.

4 – Pirate Quartermaster

Another stand-out character in 71048 Series 27 is the Pirate Quartermaster. The minifigure makes us pine for the days when LEGO Pirates was an ongoing theme and we’d definitely welcome it back with open arms. That’s not to say we haven’t enjoyed the likes of 10320 Eldorado Fortress and 31109 Pirate Ship over the last few years, but now we need a regular fix of the swarthy brick-built buccaneers going forward.

That would mean more LEGO Pirates ships, locations and minifigure, so that we can flesh out our epic seafaring adventures. As with other classic LEGO themes such as Space and Castle, Pirates feels like it should be a concept that’s revisited on a regular basis with exciting new builds and not just treated as a once every few years trip down nostalgia lane.

5 – Wolfpack Beastmaster

The highlight of 71048 Series 27 has to be the Wolfpack Beastmaster, a LEGO Classic Castle character that feels rife with storytelling potential. From his intense scowl and tattered cloak to battered protective armour and a grey wolf companion figure, this is one minifigure that’s sure to fly off store shelves on January 1.

As with LEGO Pirates, we’ve been drip-fed Classic Castle sets and characters over the last few years, most recently with 10332 Medieval Town Square. The LEGO Icons model also included a member of the Wolfpack faction amongst its minifigure selection, which makes us hope that a dedicated build featuring the fearsome Castle clan might be on the cards sometime next year or beyond.
