What will be in LEGO BrickLink Designer Program Series 8?

The eighth series of the LEGO BrickLink Designer Program will see its finalists confirmed in a few hours, and here’s what to expect.

The five sets that will be part of the BrickLink Designer Program’s eighth series are due to be revealed later today at 5pm UTC, and while we wait to see what has been chosen and who will be future fan designers, we can take an educated guess at the types of builds that will be picked.

Based on the finalists of the last seven series of the BrickLink Designer Program, here are the kinds of builds that stand a good chance of being included in the Series 8 finalists later today.

At most two Castle (or adjacent) creations

Considering the success of previous Castle projects, and even those that are adjacent, such as the nearly sold-out Adventure in Transylvania, at least one fantasy or medieval-adjacent build seems exceedingly likely for the eighth series. After a distinct lack of any kind of castle (the fortresses, not the theme) in Series 7, it wouldn’t be surprising to see an actual fortress picked as a finalist this time around.

After the immense success of the Siege Encampment and Medieval Seaside Market in Series 4, a return to two LEGO Castle models in one series also wouldn’t be surprising to see later tonight, especially with the gap since we had two castle finalists in the same series.

A nature-centric model

Looking at the history of the LEGO BrickLink Designer Program, some kind of build focusing on the beauty of nature seems all but guaranteed. Whether it opts to focus on animals or plants is another question, as both have appeared plenty of times across the series, though it has been a while since the last animal recreation.

Series 8 isn’t rife with animal options, but either way, it seems highly likely that nature will continue to play an important part in the BrickLink Designer Program.

Something affordable

After the notable success of Mictur’s Popcorn Wagon in Series 5 compared to most of the other finalists in the round, there’s every chance that the BricjkLink team would be happy to pick another affordable and low-piece build in Series 8.

From nostalgic themes to unique set concepts, this may be an opportunity for the BrickLink team to represent two reliable kinds of builds in a single project, as well. That would free up another slot for a Castle creation, or something else entirely.

An experimental concept

After the likes of W.A.L.T. and the Antique Collection in Series 7, the door is certainly open for outlandish and experimental concepts in Series 8, the likes of which the BrickLink Designer Program have never seen.

From a miniature LEGO pinball machine to wall-mounted creations that are nothing like the mosaics and painting recreations LEGO Art has on shelves, there’s a good chance to test something new and unexpected in Series 8.

An expansion of a past set

Whether they’re from a familiar fan designer or have the same aesthetic as a previous build, it wouldn’t be shocking to see a build in Series 8 that expands on a previous LEGO BrickLink Designer Program set, or multiple models.

The continuation of Hanwas and Jonas Kramm’s building collections is an example of how successful set expansions can be in the BrickLink Designer Program, and the Gothic City Square by moccermommy in particular has caught our eye after how well Adventure in Transylvania has done this week.

These are only our predictions, and feel free to check back after the finalists for Series 8 are revealed at 5pm UTC today to see how close we were.

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.
