Where are all the LEGO Star Wars Andor sets?

As the season finale of Andor debuts on Disney+, LEGO fans may be wondering why LEGO tie-in sets are thin on the ground.

Star Wars has never really gone away as a franchise, but it’s certainly had peaks and valleys of critical reception over the last few years. That’s changed in recent months, thanks to new Disney+ series Andor. Designed as a prequel to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the series follows a young Cassian Andor as he begins to fight the malevolent Galactic Empire. It’s been praised for its mature political elements, as well as the performances of Diego Luna, Stellan Skarsgård and Andy Serkis.

What we haven’t seen yet is a substantial quantity of LEGO sets inspired by the show’s events – which is ironic, as at least some scenes in the show are clearly toyetic. It’s particularly odd given the show’s running time; its twelve episodes have spawned just 1 LEGO set, while the Obi-Wan Kenobi miniseries spawned 3 despite a much smaller episode count.

Of course, popularity is no guarantee of LEGO merchandise – with popular Marvel show Moon Knight seeing no representation in LEGO form. Indeed, that show’s more mature scenes may have made a LEGO version awkward – and that maturity may also have made LEGO Andor a trickier prospect than usual.

As Vice’s Patrick Malborough has recently argued, Andor is an unusually moody and adult Star Wars story – with Disney’s Bob Iger arguing that Rogue One was a film completely devoid of political messaging. While that departure helps to bring Star Wars back to its rebellious roots, it’s also an uncomfortable fit for a brand (i.e. LEGO) that will always prioritise its younger fans. As such, 75338 Ambush on Ferrix – the lone LEGO Andor set – may have been seen as the best option. It’s a set that treads familiar Star Wars territory (and recreates some key characters) but it doesn’t really touch upon the muddy political landscape of the show more broadly.

Still, with the show’s highly positive reception (and the second, final season launching in a couple of years) it remains to be seen if the Andor range remains so small. With LEGO firmly established as an adult pursuit – within and without the Star Wars theme – a dearth of LEGO Andor sets may increasingly seem like an oversight.

75338 Ambush on Ferrix can now be purchased from LEGO.com, and includes minifigures of Cassian Andor, Luthen Rael and Syril Karn. Expect to pay £69.99 / $69.99 / €79.99 for it at full price.
