English actor Danny Dyer has revealed he got hooked on LEGO in lockdown, though he’s since moved on to ever more intricate pastures.
Dyer – who stars in Disney’s new TV series Rivals – told Empire magazine that he ‘likes to build stuff’, and is currently working on a wooden model of a library. “This one’s quite tricky, because I’ve gotta wire it all up with the electrics, so the lamps work,” he said. That’s a bit more complicated than LEGO sets (unless you decide to add third-party lighting kits, that is), but he wouldn’t have managed it without the plastic bricks.
“I went through a mad stage with LEGO during lockdown,” he revealed. “I built Hogwarts, which was amazing. So LEGO really got me into it and I thought, ‘Actually, I want to build other things.’ I’ve got these magnifying glasses, I look ridiculous, I look like Doc out of Back to the Future. But it keeps me indoors.”

The Eastenders and Football Factory actor joins an ever-growing list of celebrity fans of LEGO (CFOLs, like AFOLs, only with more prestige… probably), which also includes high-profile names like David Beckham, Hideo Kojima, Lauren Hemp, Rahul Kohli, Brie Larson and Orlando Bloom. Dyer is in good company with his choice of LEGO sets, too: Becks also tackled 71043 Hogwarts Castle back in 2019.
But while the world’s most famous footballer has continued to ply his LEGO trade, it sounds like ABS was only a stepping stone on the way to more intricate models for Dyer. He’s now building ‘a train carriage from the 1940s’, with a mechanism that sounds a lot like the one included in 71374 Nintendo Entertainment System.
“Behind the train carriage there’s a moving window so it looks like the train’s moving,” he explained. “It looks quite tricky, but I’ll start that once I’ve banged out [my] library. I just love it, I can squirrel away all day at it. I suppose it doesn’t really suit my persona. But I think a man pushing 50 needs a hobby.”
